A. Does he want a desktop computer or a laptop? What you need to do is find that out. Then you need to find out what games he's playing. If he's only playing WoW, then the gaming PC doesn't need to be that intensive. If he wants to play Battlefield 3 that's coming out, you need a more expensive machine. I would be pleased to help you but first just ask him a couple of evasive questions to the above to get more info.
Cheap, good gaming computer?
Q. I'm looking for a computer that can run steam games or minecraft well without lag. I'd prefer it to be under $600, because I'm a little tight on money. Thanks!
A. Please specify which steam games, there are a lot of them :D
If you are on a tight budget, building a computer is basically your only choice to get a decent computer. It is extremely simple and I have linked a partlist that would be perfect for your budget
$602:

This can run minecraft maxed out and most steam games at medium settings, its the best deal you can get for a gaming pc under 600, prebuilts are NOT the way to go at all, they dont come close to this gaming performance wise
