Fun video/computer games for a 9 year old boy?

Q. My son asked for some games for Christmas, but when I asked him which ones he wanted he just shrugged and said "new ones." (By new, he means ones he doesn't have yet, not games that haven't come out).
We have a wii and an xbox, and he has his own PSP and access to a family computer. Anything that doesn't seem super girly, babyish or is rated M is a viable option. If you know a good M game that is on the milder side of M, feel free to suggest it
And please don't lecture me about "the dangers of video games," my son is a good boy who loves sports and spends a lot of time outside. He's not a psychopath or a couch potato.
Thanks!

How do computers make video games?
Q. How does computer technology help make video games? Are computers the ones used to make video games?

A. Well, one could either accept that it is through magic...

... or realize that video games are programmed, just like any other application running on a computer (either a general purpose computer or a video game console - or a cellphone or other mobile device, even).

To introduce you to computer programming, you could consider testing out Python, perhaps even using the Pygame framework - http://www.python.org , http://www.pygame.org

Should i get video games even though my sister told me to get computer games?

Q. I ve always wanted video games wen my sisters were around but never need it. now my sisters went to college and im alone with my parents and granparnets. i really want vidoe games but my sisters tell me my parents are to cheeap to buy me new games everytime i want them? wat should i do

A. Computer games are video games...

BTW, I would suggest getting a system, rather then getting PC games... PC gaming is an even more expensive hobby then console gaming, as you need a good system to run the games to begin with and every couple of years you NEED (not have) to upgrade your system...

Where as the longevity in a modern console is about 5-6 years before a new system is released.... An upgrade to a PC can top 500 easily, if you want better then decent-really good hardware... Where as a console costs about 300..

Gaming computer components also aren't designed for long lasting life... They're designed for power, and the more power an electronic uses/generates, the more heat it generates, and heat is the enemy to electronics, it reduces overall life... That is why people invest in beefy cooling systems for their high end gaming rigs.

If your parents are trying to convince you to stick to PC games for the cheapness aspect, make sure you tell them the above, the overall cheaper route is consoles, PC gaming is better left to serious gamers with money to burn.

Can this computer handle modern video games?
Q. I'm talking games like Skyrim, Dragon Age, Dishonored, LEGO games, Diablo III, Assassin's Creed III and more. I looked up the specs and it seems like it'll run the games but I don't know for sure. Any thoughts?

Here's the link to the computer: http://h20386.www2.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=C3T59EA&opt=ABU&sel=PCDT

A. The Processor is slow(1.4ghz), Mine is 2.8ghz.
And the Video card is not that great, very weak card for gaming standards today
and Windows 8...Dont pick windows 8, Its meant for tablets.Id stick with Windows 7...
I recommend not getting this one if you are into gaming,
If you are gonna buy a PC you might as well build it yourself, so you'll know exactly what your new computer can do...and its cheaper..atleast mine is, Only took me 18,000 Pesos(Phillipine Money)

What video or computer games are considered "popular culture"?
Q. why are they considered popular culture? i plan on debating with my teacher about it and why video games are but i need evidence

A. Video games on a whole have become a part of mainstream culture. However, like most things, there is also a niche in gaming that only appeals to a certain audience and not the mainstream. Unlike other mediums that are mainstream, the Popular part of gaming is actually very small and applies to what is labelled casual gaming. Examples of popular and casual games would be Call of Duty, Fifa/Madden and the wii as a whole which appealed to people outside the sub culture.
There considered popular culture because they are well known and akwnowledged by people who are none gamers. Whilst a lot of games would just be saw as a nerdy or geeky thing by people outside of gaming, games like Chrono Trigger and Ico.

If you need evidence, ask someone who you know doesn't play games. Preferably middle aged people work best. Ask them:

1) Name three video games.
2) Have you heard of the Wii.
3) Have you heard of Call Of Duty / Fifa / Madden (Either one, Fifa is you live outside of america, madden if you live in america) Even pokemon works aswell in this question.
4) Have you heard of Final Fantasy VII / Ico ( Both very popular games to gamers and both were very well publicised, but it's probably only known if you play games)

It may seem a bit strange, but you will see what I mean if you ask these questions.
The first question, if you ask a non gamer, will most likely say Mario, Pokemon, Fifa, pac man or call of duty.
For the second question, the person will probably say yes, but you may see a bit of a link with the first question.
3) They will probably say yes.
4) They will most likely say no.

Draw your own conclusions and evaluations from there.

How do i learn and become a computer / video game programmer?

Q. I am a junior in high school and love video games. I am very precise and work well alone. For all these reasons i am interested in possibly pursuing a career in computer / video game programming. But first i need to learn how? I would love any suggestions on maybe a good online class i can take to get me started. Then ideas on how to make it my career. What would be the best way to get a job as a programmer? and how?

A. For one, I recommend AGAINST Eli's advice. You will not learn game programming by using the "Easy Routes". If you want to be able to make memory efficient, fast, satisfying games you should look into other methods. (If you ever want to be anything but a hobbyist programmer you HAVE to learn actual programming. Good luck getting a job if your resume only includes "Unity3D" ;D)

My Recommendation:
1: Learn a programming language (C and/or C++)
2: Learn the Windows API (Mainly for tools creation, but minimally for game programming)
3: Learn a Graphics API (DirectX and/or OpenGL)
4: Make EASY games until you are comfortable with the languages/APIs and how they work together (This will teach you the fundamentals of your programming language and graphics API of choice, how they work together, and teach you game related devices required for larger projects such as handling the game loop. This will also make learning to write proper code easier to learn because the scale of the game will be smaller, and therefore easier to manage)
5: Keep creating programs and/or games that are of your skill level, with a few newly added features. Introduce yourself to new topics slowly. Successfully creating a Pong clone is going to aid you a LOT more than failing to create a successful MMORPG.
6: If you enjoy programming, enroll in a college for Software Engineering/Computer Science. Make sure they have classes for Object Oriented Programming and things like that. If you learned a language already in High School, you will have a head start on college, so either way it will be beneficial to start now.

Also, you must work well as a team as well as alone. If you join a game company you will be working with a team and most likely working on code you did not even initially create. Blizzard didn't create World of Warcraft by paying only one man, you know! If you want to be a one man team you will need to expand your knowledge incredibly. You will need to learn how to create, rig, animate, texture models... how to create sound effects, background music... how to program the game (which seems to be what you are after)... and MUCH more. (Nothing is impossible, but as a one man team you will need to rely on releasing Indie games and hope they do well. If they do, you could be a rich, rich human being! If they don't, you might want to sign up for food stamps!)

Good luck! It's actually a lot of fun aside from chasing bugs and memory leaks, but you will not care when you have a finished project. It's just so satisfying ;D Just never forget, technology is swiftly evolving, and Game Programming is like playing a musical instrument. You are never "Finished learning".

PS-
Look into C++ Primer Plus Fifth Edition. It's a great book to learn C++.
As for IDE's to start developing with? It is completely your decision but I recommend Visual Studio 2010 Express Edition OR Bloodshed Dev-C++. You only need one, and Visual Studio is far superior, but Dev-C++ is sufficient until you get into programming graphics (Learning C++ initially will be Console Window based, and therefore a bare-bones IDE will suffice)

How do you get video games (Mainly video games for computers) onto your laptop/ computer?

Q. I was wondering if anybody knew how you can transfer computer video games to your laptop. I have a few that have been given to me by friends and was wondering how they get them. Is there a place were you can download them onto your laptop/ computer or what. Or can you put games from CD roms (eg. FIFA 09, COD etc.) onto your laptop???
How do you do this I would Very much appreciate it.

Cheers,

A. torrents are the answer, most websites that contain torrents have anything you can imagine, for instance you could download a one kilobyte torrent that contains GTA 4 but when you use a torrent program to extract it the file itself is about 20 gigabyte. You can insert the CD and right click and click on explore and copy everything, but most game cds have copyright protection software on them which prevent you from doing aything. If all else fails hack into it!

What can do in my room without a computer or video games?
Q. I can't use my computer or video games during the week. So when I'm in my room what can I do? I like to do Sudoku puzzles but that's not fun enough. What are some other things I can do?

A. Find some interesting books to read. cross puzzles are kind of fun. Can you watch TV? maybe you can jump rope and that would annoy your parents so much they would let you let on the computer for awhile
