Q. Does anyone think 3D TV will last long enough to make investing in the hardware worthwhile? I don't -- and it doesn't even matter if the technology is more realistic and less cumbersome than it has been -- I think interest in it will die completely, and in too-short a time for the price of the compatible TVs and Blu-ray players to come down appreciably.
Another attempt to make more money for the electronics and entertainment industries, based solely on the novelty of it, IMHO.
I'm slowly converting to Blu-ray myself, and am glad for the backwards compatibility with SD-DVD, but don't see me buying 3D ... ever. So far all the movies produced in 3D have been exploitative crap ... well, 90% of them. You'll never see a 3D Lawrence of Arabia or Citizen Kane.

IF this is true, then all the 3d equipment on the market is already obsolete.
Ignoring that, the hardware isn't priced too badly...sort of. Basically, all TVs going forward are going to be "3d ready", so there won't be any noticeable price bump there. However, so far, 3d only seems to be on the really big screens (40" or larger) which is going to leave a good chunk of the market out. Even 3d blu-ray players aren't priced too much higher than regular blu-ray players. And once again, the PS3 is the best overall choice for functionality and price.
However where 3d really falls down - hard - is in the area of those glasses. Costing upwards of $100 a piece they aren't cheap. And given that no store near me - not even the nice boutique stores - seem to be able to keep a working pair of glasses up and running for very long. In fact, most stores near me just don't bother anymore. They've lost enough money, so the 3d TVs sit there, blaring Black Eye Peas music with blurry pictures on the TV.
Worse still, the stupid glasses aren't even standardized. So Samsung's 3d player will only work with Samsung's 3d glasses. Lunacy! Did these fools not learn anything from the hd-dvd/blu-ray circus just a few years ago? Asking consumers to fight a format war for you just leads to slow uptake, and disenfranchised customers! For no other reason, this alone will doom 3D to the same dusty dark corner where the 2 or 3 DVD-A albums sit unnoticed next to the 2 or 3 SACD albums. What? You don't know what DVD-A or SACD is? EXACTLY!
Finally, consumers are still making the jump from SD to HD, but at least that's going at a good pace. The jump to blu-ray, meanwhile, is moving at a glacial pace. Blu-ray itself is still in flux. Blu-ray is nearly, what, 4 years old, and yet there are still new releases on a regular basis that don't work blu-ray players due to the studios not following the spec. Yeah, you can do a firmware upgrade of your blu-ray player, but that assumes you have your player connected to the internet, or have a computer with a CD burner connected to the internet, AND that your manufacturer has even produced an update for your player that fixes the problem.
Remember, by the time DVD turned 4, it was the year 2000. Name me a DVD in the year 2000 that wouldn't play on a DVD Player. Blu-ray, meanwhile, has had at least 3 that I've heard about - Pirates Of The Caribbean, Iron Man, and now Avatar. On top of that, there's a new copy protection scheme that many newer discs are using that won't even work on players you'll find in stores right now! You gotta be freaking kidding me!
And now they want us to go to 3d? Can you imagine the extra hassle that's going to cause? Now you'll have to worry about whether or not the 3d movie you want to watch is compatible with the glasses, blu-ray player AND the HDTV in your house! I predict home video is going to become as complicated as PC gaming was in the 90s, when you had to deal with the latest drivers for your video card, for your sound card, etc. OF course, you had to be careful - load the drivers in the wrong order, or use the wrong combination and your game wouldn't run. Yeah, that sounds about where we're headed now with this whole "it's a blu-ray that doesn't work on blu-ray players" thing.
