Building A gaming computer?

Q. Hey I'm mark and I want to make a gaming computer, I have NO idea on where to start but my step brother is going to help me out once I got all the parts I need. Now I only have a budget of $600 or so to make a good gaming computer from scratch. I need to know, What to get, Where to get it, And if it can run on windows 7 64-bit. And also could I take my current computers hard drive and move it into my new computer, it has 500gb of memory max.

A. My first gaming computer cost about $920, and it can still run just about everything on max settings. With hardware prices coming down so far, you could probably build an ok system for near $600, you just need to know where to get your parts. Having the hard drive already helps a lot. newegg.com has never done me wrong. Great prices and very well organized site with a trustworthy rating system. Click "shop all stores" and go into "computer hardware", then find all of the individual parts that you need.

To build a gaming computer you need the following:
Motherboard
Processor + heatsync
Power Supply
RAM
Hard Drive
Disk Drive
Graphics Card
Case

-I've built computers in the past around processors. For a Gaming computer I recommend at least a 3 core processor at 2.8ghz+. The processor and the graphics card are the two parts you should spend the most on. A processor will almost always come with a heat sync, but if you want to overclock your processor you may want to add a custom cooling unit (I do not generally recommend this). If you wish to run either mac or Linux on your computer along with windows, I recommend an Intel processor, but if you only want to run windows, I recommend AMD. The only real benefit you would have in spending more on an Intel would be compatibility with Unix based OSs, which are useless for gaming.

-Next, I find a motherboard that has the appropriate processor socket that lists support for your processor Wattage and type. There are usually too many components to a motherboard to be too specific, but just make sure it's compatible with what you need and has a good rating for its price.

- You may find a motherboard you like and choose RAM to go with it, or find RAM and choose a motherboard that is compatible with your processor. The higher the number of the ram's DDR, the faster it'll go. Standard at this point is now DDR3, but some computer run as fast as DDR5 or more. For a gaming computer I recommend no less than 6GB of RAM, but for most games RAM requirement is not very high.

- The Graphics card is the most crucial bottleneck of your gaming computer. They're very complicated and have many specs. You will probably spend more on the card than on your processor. My graphics card is 1GB 256bit DDR3 NVidia with 700MHz core clock speed and I'm able to run most new games on max graphics settings. Normally you can trust the reviews of how good a card is, but you'll generally get what you pay for. Just make sure you have the right PCI port to run the card you choose. Also make sure you get one with the outputs you need, HDMI, VGA, or DVI.

- Power supplies can be complicated, but newegg has a great feature that calculates the wattage you'll need for your computer. It's under "Computer Hardware", the last option on the far right, "Power Supply Wattage Calculator". Fill out the info, get your wattage, find a high rated power supply with that wattage. easy-peasy

- Don't spend too much on a case, just make sure your stuff will fit. parts are usually the right size, you just need the right number of ports for hard drives and disk drives. If you have an existing case you want to use, go for it.

- Get a disk drive, a burner might be nice, not a big deal.

- As far as the hard drive goes, just format the drive to wipe all the data and it shouldn't give you too many problems. You might have to find a SATA cable to hook it up to a new motherboard if you don't have one.

- Most new hardware will just run 64 bit by default, but you'll want to verify that your processor will run it. If it's 3 cores or more, it probably will.

Good luck!

what type of memory do computer games use?
Q. hi,

Ok, so I was downloading a game yesterday from steam and it said 130 MB/1.2 GB and I was wondering if that would use RAM or what? I have 4 GB of RAM on my pc so does that mean I'm going to run out of memory if I download say 3 or 4 more games? how does it work and how do I know how much memory I have left?

thanks =].

A. Let me clear things up here... Your computer has 2 places where game data is stored... RAM (Random Access Memory) & the HDD (Hard Disk Drive).

RAM, which is short for Random Access Memory, is the temporary work space there active applications stores data so it can be quickly accessed by the processor (as it's right by the processor in your computer, so the data is asks for is there in nanoseconds [1 nanosecond = 0.0001 milliseconds = 0.000000001 seconds). You only need RAM when you want to run programs (like games) on your system. RAM is temporary storage as the RAM gets wiped when you turn off your system. If you run out of RAM, you generally can't run any more programs on your computer until you close some active programs to free up the space.

HOWEVER, modern computers have a little memory cheat called "Virtual RAM" (which is also called the "Page File") where the OS sends off running, but inactive / idle programs out of RAM & onto a designated part of the HDD to free up space for the next program that you're trying to run until that program gets attention ... where the OS brings that program's data back into RAM & throws other programs on the page file (on the HDD) in it's place.

Usage of "Virtual RAM" or the Page File is generally discouraged by many power users. While it does allow you run more programs than what your system would normally be allowed to, it does seriously slow down your system when stuff gets frequently transfer between RAM & the Page File, sometime to the point where the system seems to be frozen (which is a highly undesirable state that's considered as "Thrashing").

The Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is the place where ALL the program data is stored for more persistent & long-term as data is retained even while the power is off on the PC. HDD's are slower storage (varies between a few milliseconds to a couple of seconds, depending on the amount of data that needs transfering) as it's a considerable distance from the RAM & processor, but more stable. HDD space is critical as if you run out of HDD space, you can't store anything more on your computer until you delete stuff. Generally having LESS than 10% of your HDD space free can negatively impact system performance... so it's something that you want to avoid, if possible.

Now that you're educated on the difference between RAM & HDD... The figures you were looking at were for HDD space, as the game you were download is requiring 1.2 GB's of HDD space. Once downloaded, that game may require between 1 - 2 GB's of RAM to play it (unless it's a large, recent release... which may require all 4 GB's).

1.2 GB's of HDD space is considerable but relatively small as most computers generally have around 500 GB - 2 TB (~2000 GB) of storage space, so it would take about 0.24 - 0.06% of the total HDD's available space. Just be aware that some PC games can take up as much as 20 GB's of HDD space... so use that as a guideline, you could store around 22 - 95 games on your system (these are only estimates as I have to allocate some space for the OS, which is why the numbers are LESS than expected), depending on the actual amount of space available

Based on my current installed library on Steam (I don't have all my games installed by choice), I'm using 70 GB's over 25 games... so I'm averaging around 2.8 GB / game, just to provide a more realistic guideline here.

Hope this sheds some light on the subject & educate you on the finer points of computers.

Is a 512mb graphics card good for computer games?

Q. I need to get a new graphics card for my computer and it has to be PCI express x16. I just need one to play games on my computer without paying a ridiculous amount of money.

A. It depends on the game that you want to play and memory is not the only thing that can decide the performance. You have to consider gpu clock, vram clock, gpu nus width etc. Games based on DirectX 9c will run pretty good on 512mb graphics card. You can try Nvidia 9400gt. But newer games will not run on 512mb gpu with optimal performance.

Will it hurt my computer if I plaly any steam games if I dont have a graphics card?
Q. Will it hurt my computer if I plaly any steam games if I dont have a graphics card? If so how can I get a good enough one at a cheap price. I heard it matters by what kind of computer you have to get a certain card. Is that true. I have a Dell and Windows XP. That's all I know about my computer.

A. You can't hurt your computer by running programs off of Steam. They might not work at all (due to the lack of a dedicated graphics card in your system), but you can't break anything.

The answer to which graphics card is the right one for your computer is a little harder to answer, since it does in deed depend on your PC (or more precisely your PCs Motherboard). There are three kinds of interfaces that could be present on your Motherboard that graphics cards can be connected to: ISA, AGP and PCI.

If you tell us the model number of your Dell PC I can tell you what kind of interface you have available. (If you don't know the model number, run the "System Information" tool in your "START menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools" folder, it will tell you).

"Cheap price" is open to interpretation, but click on the link below to see some recommendations for different price ranges and bus types. I buy most of my computer equipment online from Newegg, so I added a link for them as well. I don't work for them or have any other affiliation, I'm just a satisfied customer.

Feel free to contact me directly if you have more detailed questions.

A good gaming computer?

Q. I need a good gaming computer that will last and play very nice and runs everything fine, I have 1000 to spend, please do give suggestions. For what games you may ask, like Rift on ultra settings, WoW on highest settings, my point is Plays nice and runs nice and all.
Ah I might try and build it then, but wait wouldn't I need to buy like windows 7 over again or something?

A. From personal experience, the BEST computer is a custom built PC. You get FAR superior build quality if you put the hardware together yourself than a factory laborer. Not only that, but the end user (you) is the one choosing what goes in the computer.

I strongly suggest building your computer. With proper research and knowledge, anyone can build a PC. From anecdotal experience, I built my first computer when I was 15 years old (I was half clueless about computers back then) and it's still living and breathing today! My point is, you do not have to be an highly skilled expert or a computer repair guy to be able to build one.
Start here: http://www.newegg.com/

im trying to build a gaming computer that can play Eve online Rift fallout, Elder scrolls ect.?
Q. i only have 900 dollars to build or buy it please help!!!!!!

A. I am personally an Intel/nVidia fan. AMD/ATi stuff can be cheaper, but I have found, in the long run, it has more conflicts with software and certain graphics engines that are in use today. Plus, CCP is in major cahoots with nVidia as far as future game development goes.

Two of my favorite sites for buying parts:

http://www.newegg.com and http://www.tigerdirect.com
Newegg is going to be cheaper and tigerdirect is more likley to have something in stock.

A minimum is the new Intel series of iCore processors. Now, you can easily get by with a Core2Quad processor, but it's not THAT much more for the latest generation i5 processor. And, at least 3.0GHz.

Also, the GT4xx sereis of nVidia cards. Again, the GT2xx series cards would do, but it's not that much more to get the 400 series. At least 1GB video card memory.

At least 8GB system RAM. If you want to spring for the fastest system memory, go ahead, but 1333MHz memory should be fast enough for a while.

HDD capacity is up to you. I know modern drives are in 1TB+ range, but unless you're going to be doing some serious video editing or something, 500GB will easily suffice. You could setup a few 100GB drives in a RAID system, but that's if you're geeky enough to get it all configured.

CD/DVD drive. No more than $20--unless, for some strange reason you have to have a Blu-Ray computer system. I watch Blu-Ray movies on my big TV, not on my computer monitor. But, the choice is yours.

Case; Something with LOTS of fans [NOT lights]. The more the better. LOTS of airflow. Screw cases that light up. The lights on the inside of your case do nothing for performance. I do not care how the case on the side of my desk looks. I care about how the stuff inside it performs and how what it puts onto my monitor looks.
Power supply: at least 650W and to help with room, go MODULAR!!!!!. It is such a pain to have a case with fans and good airflow, just to block it all by stuffing unused power cables off to the side.

Monitor: some will argue bigger is better, but I find that isn't the case. The bigger the monitor--just like a flat screen TV--the further away you have to be from it to make it look good. Most affordable monitors are going to have 1920x1080 [or High Def] resolution. That means 1080 dots from top to bottom by 1920 dots from side to side. Now, for a better picture for anything, the smaller the dot you use to make up the picture the finer the detail it is going to have. So, do you want 1080 fine dots in a 23 to 24inch monitor or 1080 big blocks in a 40 inch monitor? Keep your HD TV big, not your monitor. Not in your budget but, there are 32+ inch monitors that go well beyond 1920x1080, providing for an incredible looking, detailed picture. Those are for professionals and are priced for professionals.

You should be able to build an acceptable system for $900. I just put together one a buddy of mine ordered. Now, his cost $1400, but he went with 16GB of RAM, 180GB SSD [instead of an HDD], a $300.00 32" monitor--which he complained didn't look as nice as my 24" monitor :), a liquid cooling system for both CPU and vid card, and an i7 processor.

Cheap gaming computer parts?

Q. I'm looking for extremely cheap gaming computer parts I'm on a low budget.

A. hi hayden
you wont get extremely cheap computer components since the only way to get parts that cheap would be either e-bay or at a computer fair ( were you can get some amazing deals )
however the best prices in the uk at the moment can be found at aria ( http://www.aria.co.uk/ ) were you can get some insane prices on cpu,s ,motherboard ect ... for example you can get a Intel Core i3-2120 for just £86 ( http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/Intel+Core+i3-2120+3.30GHz+%28Sandy+Bridge%29+Socket+LGA1155+Processor+-+Retail+?productId=43840 ) .. however if your looking at a new build then a motherboard bundle may be a better option and you can get a core i3 based bundle for just £179 ( http://www.aria.co.uk/Systems/Bundles/Next+Day+Bundles/Gladiator+Intel+i3-2120+Sandy+Bridge+Dual-Core+Next+Day+Bundle+?productId=52494 ) and this comprises of a core i3 2120,a B75 chipset motherboard with usb3.0 and sata 6gb and 8gb of ddr3 memory running at 1333mhz !
the great thing about motherboard bundles is you can still use your existing case, power supply, hard drive and optical drive .. however since the core components like the cpu and memory have been upgraded the difference is there and your pc allthough not new will feel like its new
another site to check out is novatech ( http://www.novatech.co.uk/ ) who also do some of the lowest priced components and upgrades in the uk .. they also do motherboard bundles however they also do "barebone bundles" which are like motherboard bundles but also include a case and power supply
this makes a upgrade even easier since you only need to add a hard drive and optical drive and your good to go .....
i use barebone bundles when building pc,s for people.. not because i cant do the build myself but because it saves money for the prospective owner and the product comes with a warranty .....
check out aria and novatech .. im sure you will find what you need
i hope this helps hayden .. any questions let me know
good luck mate !

Gaming Computer Parts?
Q. So I'm building a gaming computer. Nothing really "Crysis At Max" but something that will get the job done. My budget is 1000$. If someone could link me some good parts I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

A. I built a PC once that could run Crysis at pretty decent settings with 60 FPS at 1280x1024, here are the specs:

4 GB DDR2 RAM: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=f64&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&q=4gb+SDRAM+PC2-4300&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=1181866435619278402&ei=oZQ3Tab7OMLSgQfnjqD3CA&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CEgQ8wIwAg#

ASUS P5N-D Mobo: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=asus+p5n-d&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=15668045463544614365&ei=4pE3TaikPITpgQfixoXdCA&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CEkQ8wIwAw#

Intel Core 2 Duo E7500: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0332290

ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB GDDR5: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0354215

1TB Hard Drive: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=1+tb+hard+drive&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=15522266661423939392&ei=G5M3TenDDZLpgAfunPHsCA&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=5&ved=0CGMQ8wIwBA#

Computer Case: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0346289

950W PSU: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0319692

The total ads up to around $748 (More or less), so it's well within your budget. With the money left over, you could buy more games.
These aren't the exact specs I used (My RAM was actually 2 GB), but it's close enough.

Can this gaming computer run bf3 and/or skyrim?

Q. It says it can play bf3 and skyrim med settings at a constant 30 fps, check it out and tell me if u think that's true or not based on the specs please :) thx

http://www.omnitechnews.net/2011/11/building-a-gaming-pc-that-will-run-battlefield-3-or-skyrim-maxed-out-for-under-600/

A. *** Updated ***

Yes and no.

Strictly speaking in terms of the supported hardware specs, yes. However, a couple of those items are VERY poor choices. Also, they're talking about a $600 hardware build, which means you're spending $700 after adding a copy of Windows 7. Anyway, let's break their proposed build down into the good, the bad and the ugly.

The Good:
A Radeon HD 6870 is definitely up to the task. In BF3 on HIGH settings, the 6870 manages just over 50fps at 1920x1080. It manages over 30fps on *ULTRA* settings at 1680x1050 or lower resolution. It does Skyrim on ultra at 1080p easily. That's a winner!

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/battlefield-3-graphics-performance,3063-8.html
http://www.guru3d.com/article/battlefield-3-vga-and-cpu-performance-benchmark-test/5
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/skyrim-performance-benchmark,3074-6.html

The 8GB of Patriot RAM is also great, although these days RAM is so cheap it could just as easily be G.SKILL, Corsair, A.DATA, whatever.

The Bad:

A Phenom II X6 1035T is one of the WORST choices around that price for a gaming computer. It's got 6 cores----- so what!?!?! Extra cores are great for movie editing encoding, but are worthless for gaming- most titles (including Battlefield 3, Crysis, Skyrim and Starcraft 2) don't utilize more than 2-3 cores! What matters on the CPU side is clock speed, not the number of cores. And the 1035T is a paltry 2.6Ghz, making it slower than a Phenom II X4 945 in games!! And *MUCH* slower than a Core i3 2100, which only costs $125 and matches (or beats) AMD's high-end Phenom II X4 970 and X6 1100T.

The Cooler Master Storm Scout case is a head-scratcher. Nice case, but it costs $80.. if we're trying to squeeze down to a $600 budget, why not go with a $50-$60 case? The HAF 912 is only $60 out the door.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233

The SSD- they even admit it's a gimmick. Only useful if you've already got another hard drive to install your games. Since you can get a regular hard drive for the same price, you'd want to do that instead.

The Ugly:

That Coolmax power supply is something I'd expect to find strapped to a psychopath trying to sneak past checkpoints in Pakistan, not in your new gaming computer. Really.. Coolmax is one of the lowest-quality brands of psus. That thing is likely to fail with a spectacularly loud pop and shower of sparks sooner rather than later, probably taking other expensive components along with it. I wouldn't plug that psu into any components I cared about.

http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx

So you definitely need a better psu. I always recommend going with a Tier 2 or better brand like Corsair, Antec, Seasonic, Silverstone, XFX, Enermax etc. That way you don't have any problems, and it lasts 4+ years. I'd go with the Antec Neo Eco 620W psu for about $70, or maybe the Seasonic S12II 620W or XFX Core Editon 550W around the same price. Buying a pair of crappy $35 power supplies over the same timeframe (and hoping they don't damage anything else when they fail) isn't more economical.

On the CPU/motherboard you've got choices. Either you stick with their proposed socket AM3 build and try to find a Phenom II X4 somewhere (only the 960T is still available on Newegg) or go socket LGA1155. The AsRock H61M-VS motherboard is only $55 and a Core i3 2120 is just $128.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/the-sandy-bridge-review-intel-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested/20

So it's doable, but probably a little more expensive than advertised.

Affordable gaming computers?
Q. I'm looking for a computer (not a lap top or note book etc) that is suited for gaming from retail. Not something mega expensive that can run the worlds best graphics on highest settings, just something affordable that can run newer games like Bf3, arma 2 on higher-medium visuals.

A. If you do want a computer which can run ALL the newest games on highest settings then it won't be cheap. You could prob get one for about £600 or £500 for a stretch.

Best Gaming Computer for under $3000?

Q. Hi,
I want to get the best gaming rig I can for under $3000. I'd probably need to customize it, but that's fine, just tell me what specs I should get!

Thanks so much!

A. Build it yourself. For $3000, you can get an absolutely SICK computer (whatever you do, DONT buy an overpriced alienware).

Try ordering all your parts off newegg.

Use this motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130574&Tpk=msi%20p67

This power supply (trust me, it will power virtually anything)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139022&cm_re=tx_850-_-17-139-022-_-Product

Two of these graphics cards. (if you want, the ATI Radeon 6990 is nice, and the 2 Nvidia GTX 570s would perform quite nicely with a little bit more money. In all honesty, though, there is no way to justify the price for a single, high end GTX 580, when cheaper dual card setups offer better performance).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102914&cm_re=6950-_-14-102-914-_-Product

This processor (or go with a 2600k if you feel like splurging a bit)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072&Tpk=2500k

This memory (maybe excessive, but you want a high end rig)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231311&cm_re=8gb_ddr3-_-20-231-311-_-Product

This DVD drive (it doesn't really matter which drive you get)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136216&cm_re=dvd_drive-_-27-136-216-_-Product

This hard drive (you can pay for a bigger or faster hard drive if you need it).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218

This CPU cooler (works fine. This cooler is great, but in all honesty, the 2500k and 2600k processors run very cool anyway).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065&cm_re=hyper_212%2b-_-35-103-065-_-Product

Any of these cases (pick a case you like, but be sure that it's not to small, and buy extra case fans if you can. The antec 900 is more than fine)
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=7&name=Computer-Cases&Order=RATING

And this MONSTER of a monitor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824185011&cm_re=2560x1440-_-24-185-011-_-Product
This thing is past HD, it professional. You've never seen detail like that before. But alternatively, you could buy 3 smaller monitors for a multi monitor setup for a similar price.

And windows 7 home premium 64 bit, $100 of newegg.

Get yourself a mouse, keyboard, and speakers, and you have a sick gaming rig that costs less than $3000. Putting it together is actually pretty easy.

EDIT: And by the way, please don't make the mistake of wasting $2800 on a computer only to use a single 1920x1080 monitor ot TV. Your computer will never live up to it's true potential! Buy 3 good screens or the beautiful $800 ultra high res monitor I described, so you can at least put all that computer power to use.

Best Gaming Computer for under $3000?
Q. Hello!

I'm looking to build my first gaming computer, and so I would like to have the best gaming computer possible for under $3000.

So, if someone could link me to the best computer parts of my price range, (CPU, Processor, Case, etc) from NewEgg or TigerDirect, that would be so fantastic, I'm a teenager and I'm really interested in building my own gaming rig, but I really don't know what the best parts would be, so I'm asking the experienced guys!

And also, if anyone knows any good books or guides on how to build a computer for beginners, that would be awesome as well.

I know this is sort of a lot to ask, but I really do appreciate you guys helping me.

Thanks!!

A. A gaming computer around $3,000 is WAY overkill! You can easily build a high end rig for about $1,200.

Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS IV EXTREME - $365 SOLD OUT NEWEGG
Processor: Intel Core i7-2600K - $329
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) X 2 total of 16GB RAM - $200
GPU: 2 XFX Radeon HD 6970 - $380 X 2 - $760
Case: Cooler Master HAF X - $180 with rebate
HDD: 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black - $88
Optical: LG WH10LS30 10X Blu-ray Burner - $90
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium OEM - $100
Power Supply: SILVERSTONE OP1000-P 1000W ATX Power - $120 after MIR

Total: $2,232

You can pick yourself a good monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Might even have some cash for an SSD.

How do i record videos of computer games?

Q. i want to start recording videos to put on youtube. i know how to put videos on youtube but don't know how to record them.
can someone help me?
(i want to record without limit time and with sound and for free)

A. one of the best

Game Cam (Windows) - free screen capture software that allows the recording of real-time in-game movies. Game Cam automatically searches for games installed on your computer and creates an individual recording profile for every game. Game play footage can be recorded with or without sound. Game Cam is designed to work with most DirectX 7, 8, 9, 10 and OpenGL games.

Fun video/computer games for a 9 year old boy?
Q. My son asked for some games for Christmas, but when I asked him which ones he wanted he just shrugged and said "new ones." (By new, he means ones he doesn't have yet, not games that haven't come out).
We have a wii and an xbox, and he has his own PSP and access to a family computer. Anything that doesn't seem super girly, babyish or is rated M is a viable option. If you know a good M game that is on the milder side of M, feel free to suggest it
And please don't lecture me about "the dangers of video games," my son is a good boy who loves sports and spends a lot of time outside. He's not a psychopath or a couch potato.
Thanks!

What is the best factor for smooth and stable gaming performance in computer? The Video Card or the Processor?

Q. Hi. Just wanna ask which factor greatly affects the performance in gaming, the video card or the processor. I'm planning to change my video card to Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT 512 mb, but I already have ATI Radeon 9600 XT, which is a good video card as they say but it seems so lag in playing Cabal and Ran Online. My processor is Intel Pentium 4 2.67 ghz and also I have a plan to change it to Core2Duo 2.67ghz. But I'm not sure what to change to improve my gaming performance in my PC. Which should I change? My video card or my processor? I want to have smooth and fast gaming experience so please help me! Thank you to those who will help me!

A. For most 3D games and first-person-shooter games, the video card is more important than the processor, although a fast processor is a good idea, too.

Much depends on where you see the lag, and how the game is designed. In some cases, it's the video card that is slow in rendering elements on the screen, but in other cases, it could be the CPU trying to catch up with visuals or with non-visual elements of game play. Certain types of games, such as flight simulations, are more dependent on the CPU than on the video card.

The change in CPU that you contemplate is more of a jump than the change in video card. A faster CPU improves overall system performance (not just in games). But it really depends on which games you play.

I once upgraded a video card on a machine and improved the performance of The Sims 2 by a factor of tenbut the performance of Flight Simulator hardly changed at all. Then, some time later, I installed a faster processor, and the Flight Simulator improved significantly, whereas The Sims 2 hardly changed at all. So it depends on what you are running. A game like The Sims 2 depends heavily on advanced 3D graphics; something like Flight Simulator has to generate most of the graphics with the CPU (because of their complexity), and can't profit as much from a fast graphics card.

A fast dual-core CPU will buy you more for games than a quad-core with a slower clock, by the way. Most games aren't multithreaded enough to profit from a quad-core, so two or more cores remain idle.

What is a high quality video card for computer games?
Q. I love playing the sims 2 on weekends but the video card for my computer isn't high quality enough to play the newer versions of the games. What is a video card that won't cost me a fortune and works well?

And I have no idea what kind of video card I have now, so if you ask I won't be able to tell you.

A. Most high-end video cards have discarded 2D rendering perfomance for greater 3D. The Sims 2 is 2D, so you probably won't be able to run with the best video card. Plus, you'd probably have a huge CPU bottleneck IF your slot is actually compatible

I recommend nVidia GeForce 7800 or equivilent, sounds like your computer is old and has an AGP slot, this is the best card you can get with an AGP slot.

Good/Moderate gaming computers under 300 or 400?
Q. I want to get a computer that can specifically run the game Maplestory. Maplestory takes up about 1900kb or something like that. I'm hoping to get it under 300, but 400 is really the limit.
Thanks guys, and I don't really want to build a computer because then I would need to buy Windows for the computer, and that is like an extra 160$. Also, if you guys can give me a specific computer that is sure to be able to handle Maplestory, it would be great :D.

A. to Game you need a decent computer that price would get you a computer to surf the net and email .

Best WoW Gaming Computer?

Please keep price in mind and list them in order from best to worst If you want to.
Thank you!

A. An AMD X6 processor won't do you any good for Warcraft. In fact, few programs make full use of all six cores. (Those would be programs like 3D rendering or video encoding.)

For Warcraft, the best performing CPU will be whichever CPU has the highest clock speed per core, and the largest cache, even if it's a dual core CPU, rather than a quad.

For example, the new AMD Phenom II X2 560 Black --3.3GHz, 6MB cache --is pretty good in WoW. The Intel Core i3 and Core i5 dual core processors are even better --faster than AMD X6 processors.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/62

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,693737/WoW-Wrath-of-the-Lich-King-CPU-benchmarks-with-Phenom-II-and-Core-i5/Practice/

Apparently, using a quad core CPU can reduce slowdowns, to some extent, during "streaming" updates/downloads inside the game --so, there is some benefit to having four cores --but, generally speaking, your top priority should be to get the CPU with the highest clock speed, rather than more cores.

If you have a comfortable budget, an optimal configuration for WoW would be an Intel Core i5-750,* 4GB RAM, and a GeForce GTX 460 1GB.

(*On the Core i5-750, the nominal speed of 2.66 GHz sounds slow, but it has 8MB of cache, and the Turbo-Boost feature can temporarily boost the clock speed up to 3.2 GHz for two cores. In WoW, it's fast. Plus, it's still a quad core, for multi-threaded programs that can use that.)

GTX 460 1GB in Warcraft,

Will this computer be good with Games (Quake 4, Oblivion, WoW)?
Q. I have found this laptop off the internet and have some questions about it:
1. Is it worth what your gonna pay for it ($1450)?
2. Will it run Quake 4, Oblivion, and WoW well (I really want good performance on WoW)?
3. Is it a fast computer?
4. Should I get it?

Here's the link to the laptop you are evaluating for me:
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pdet.to?seg=HHO&poid=403664&tab=reviews

(if the link doesn't work the laptop is called Satellite X205-S9800 and you can look it up on Toshiba)
Edit- I do not GODLY speed, I used to get 10-12 FPS in WoW, so I'm really looking just for like 20-30. Please don't recommend any other laptops unless there just as good for a cheaper price. Thanks

A. Yea, that computer looks pretty good for all the games. WoW will run amazingly well, Quake 4 and Oblivion will also run, but you might need to turn the graphics down a bit. I've never run either on a PC, just on the X-Box 360.

Help! Husband and son addicted to computer game!?

Q. My husband and 12-year-old son are completely addicted to an online computer game. They play it from the moment they get home until well past my son's bedtime - literally 4-5 hours a night, and much longer on weekends. The only thing they'll stop playing for is if my son has baseball or soccer. This game has totally consumed their lives.

Now, my son is doing fine in school, is in great physical shape, and has tons of friends (who also play this stupid game, although not nearly as much). But I still feel this is very unhealthy! But my husband insists there's nothing wrong with it - it's their way of relaxing, bonding and spending "quality time" together. And he points out that he spends a lot more time with our son than most fathers do - which is probably true.

My argument is: wouldn't it be better to spend some of that "quality time" doing something else? Going fishing, building a doghouse, making model airplanes? Even some good old-fashioned TV watching?? But my husband counters with: how is any of that better? What's it matter what we're doing, as long as we're together having fun?

I don't know how to reply to that! Does he have a point? Is it really okay to spend 10 hours straight on a Saturday playing a computer game? I just can't see how that's healthy - but I can't come up with anything else to prove my point!

HELP!!

A. Some computer games are extremely addicting and can seriously ruin peoples lives if not taken care of. Some games even clearly warn you about possible addiction on the back. Let me tell you a little about my personal experiences with games like this.

It all started four years ago when i bought a game called World of Warcraft. The most addicting game that exists. There are millions of people around the world that play this famouse game and get addicted to it and sad to say i was one of them. Me and my friends would play this game every singal possible moment we could. Though i wasnt as addicted as my friends i still would play the game well over ten hours if i could. My friends would skip school to stay home and play the game, they would stay up days playing it for days! After 4 years i finally realised that what i was doing was wrong and if i keept going on like that i would seriously mess up my life. I found the power to quit that stupid game after 4 years! Sadly i cant say the same for a lot of my close friends who to this day are still addicted. They hardly ever leave their house! It is really hard to get over the addiction if your really get into it, it has been described worst than drugs. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/3338422/Video-game-addiction-'like-being-on-drugs'.html
http://www.ggl.com/?controller=News&id=3675&method=article

This has not just happend to myself and my friends, this game has been on the news sevral times for causing deaths and putting people in the ER. Some kid stayed awake for 3 days playing the game without eating or anything and ended up in ER because of a computer game!

Computer gaming Hardware specs?

Q. Im getting a new comp wanted to know if it was good enough to play most of the newer games on the market on low detail
3.0 Ghz Amd dual core
9800 Nvidea
2 250 GB SATA hard drives
4 Gb of RAM
I dont really know a lot about computers and this computer is actually a gift so I wanted to know if I could play games on this computer I dont really know if this computer is slow or fast

A. Actually the said specs has met the maximum requirements of gaming computer unit. Before install the game software check first the specification so that you an idea about the game requirements.

Does excessive computer gaming harm computer hardware?
Q. I am not very fund of computer gaming, but want to play the FIFA Football Manager 10 from EA Sports, after a friend recommended it. But I have been told about possible hardware problems that long hours of gaming bring to a computer. I have 4GBs of RAM but no graphics accelerator card. Please also suggest if this game will run in my computer with or without hassles.

A. If you have 4 gigs of RAM I'm guessing you have a fairly decent video card, so you shouldn't have a problem running it. The only thing I can think of that would harm a computer while gaming is if it gets too hot. When a computer overheats it wears on hardware so just make sure you keep it cool. There are cooling mats that you can buy at tech stores for this.

Whats a good gaming computer configuration under $1200?

Q. I am building a computer in the summer, and I wanted to know what kind of configuration was good. I want an i7 and the new GTX 680. I am not sure which i7 i should get, and what the other parts should be. I dont care about the case design, and I am planning to overclock. I want it to be preferably under $1200, but its ok if it exceeds my price limit a little bit.

A. There's too much parts out there to choose the best for you. Instead of listing what you should buy, i'll tell you what to look for.

The only thing i'll tell you to buy: Go for an i5 2500k. An i7 2600k does perform a bit better, but also costs quite some more. The i5 2500k is more than fast enough for gaming.

Since you're planning to overclock, you'll need a P67 or Z68 motherboard. Any motherboard with that chipset will do, but perhaps you want some special features on your motherboard.

Something to consider for overclocking: Liquid cooling. There are several easy to install liquid cooling solutions for under 100 dollars. They greatly increase your overclocking potentiol, so definitely worth checking it out. An example of a great liquid cooling set is the corsair H100, but cheaper ones will suffice too.

Just a little bit about RAM: 4GB of RAM is fine for gaming, but since it's so cheap these days a lot of people get 8GB of RAM. Don't bother getting more than that, it's just a waste. Don't bother paying too much for the RAM too, DDR3-1333 really is fine. If you know what you're doing you could get DDR3-1600, don't bother with more than that.
It's recommended to get exactly two sticks of RAM to make full use of dual channel memory. It'll perform a bit better than one or four sticks, not that much but there's a difference.

Last tip: When buying a PSU, don't go over 750W. 650W probably is enough already.

Gaming computer for about $1200?
Q. Hey I am getting a laptop for college and want to be prepared. I love MMORPGS and am awaiting the arrival of Guild Wars 2. The laptop will need to be able to play games at good quality and run smoothly. I also make hip hop beats and I will need it for schoolwork. $1200 is my maximum price. I also want a safe website where I could purchase the laptop from, it must have a 2nd gen i7 processor and I want a dependable laptop that that is not known to have problems. (for example the Asus gamers republic with its power up button issues).

A. Check ASUS N55SF-EH71 - http://www.amazon.com/N55SF-EH71-15-6-Inch-Versatile-Entertainment-Laptop/dp/B005UUSIKO/ref=sr_1_42?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=pc&tag=basebal-20&ie=UTF8&qid=1329659703&sr=1-42

It's got 2nd generation Intel i7 2.2 Ghz processor, 8GB RAM, 750GB hard drive and Nvidia GT 555M 2GB graphics card.

Nvidia GT 555M 2GB graphics card will all latest games like Skyrim, BF3, MW3, etc. on highest settings.

A. Well, you can get more specs for less money if you build your own computer, and it's relatively easy to build as long as you make sure all the components fit and are compatible with each other. However, the Asus you mentioned is an excellent gaming laptop, and you can easily play all of today's top games, including graphically intense ones like Total War on it. From what I remember it received excellent reviews. It isn't however very mobile which kind of beats the purpose of a laptop.

In the end if you want to do more than just play games and are at least a little tech savvy you should build a desktop, but if you want something ready made you can pick up from Best Buy I would reccomend the Asus

What headphones are good for computer gaming?
Q. Optional: Why?

A. the razer tiamat's are a good entry pair of gaming headphones. it should help you test out whether you prefer positional audio setups (surround sound) or high fidelity stereo (don't be fooled, top of the line stereo headsets will outperform nearly every "gaming" equivalent).

The tiamat has a great condenser and the noise cancelling mic is superb. A con is it's not made for people with big ears. The mmx 300 has an incredible soundstage, and is one of the premiere "gaming" headsets that actually lives up to its word. much more expensive tho. check out sennheiser too.

read reviews and get informed as possible before buying. good luck!

What are some GOOD CHEAP gaming computers?

Q. i need a good cheap gaming computer!!!!! any ideas?? please leave a link to where i can go and research it! thanks!

A. The most important thing for a gaming computer is the graphics chip, so you need a good one. This chart compares the performance of many common graphics chips. Gaming performance would be pretty good for any GPU appearing in the top 85 or so on that list.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

You don't need the world's most powerful CPU to run games --you don't need a super expensive CPU, or a quad core --but you do need a CPU that supports your graphics chip sufficiently, one that's fast enough to run the graphics chip at something near it's full performance, without presenting a major bottleneck.

Among newer CPUs, the Intel dual core i3 and i5 processors are very good for gaming. Any CPU appearing in the top 55 or so on this list should be good for gaming.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html

So, for example, here's an Acer with a Radeon 5650 GPU (number 43 on the graphics card list), and a i5-430M (2.26GHz) CPU (number 38 on the processors list), for $800. I normally wouldn't recommend Acer laptops, but for that price range, the specs are very good --it would undoubtedly run games.

Are there cheap gaming computers out there?
Q. Hi, thanks for taking the time to look at this question.

I'm looking for a cheap gaming computer that I don't have to assemble myself. I've PC gamed in the past but nothing extensive, and for the past couple years or so I've been exiled to console gaming. My budget would not exceed 200 dollars.. unfortunately money is tight.

Any information would be most appreciated.

Thanks again.

A. any gaming computer that you assemble isnt going to be cheap.
MOST gaming computers that you assemble yourself aren't cheap and anything that's cheap means it won't play games, self assembled or not.

for $200 you can't even buy a PS4.
if you seriously have such a small budget your best thing to do is stick with console gaming. console gaming is much cheaper than PC gaming however you don't get the highest level graphics possible. PC gaming is expensive but you get the latest technology as soon as it's released. for a gaming computer that can handle new games, expect to pay close to $1000.

beginner online games?

Q. I've been meaning to try an online game for awhile now and the one that really caught my eye was Shaiya. I like the whole 'good and evil' thing. (The story of Shaiya seems quite interesting)

My question.. is it's a smart move to start with Shaiya, when I've never actually played an online game before? I'm not really interested in any other online game, but it would be really sad if I'd throw myself into a lion pit with only a stick D;

A. This is the key to your questions:
Vindictus by Nexon. 3D hack and slash!

First off I have to say the game is incredible! Amazing story-line, graphics, game play, weapons, players and more! Don't play that crappy *** Wizard101 and **** for retards. It sucks ball. Games like that need to be removed because they are so kiddo. You have to pay for everything in that game almost! In Vindictus, you can pay for some cool crap but it isn't needed to finish the damn game. Here are reasons why Vindictus is great:

1) The Graphics. Depending on your computer, if you set it the highest point of quality, you will find the game amazing. Think off World of Warcraft, but more kick *** and less fantasy. There are some gores to the game as well. Some sexual content but few...
2) The Story-Line. Holy Fak ball I almost tried my **** when the first Season story-line ended! Now they started Season 2 but it just got in to the first chapter of it. I love how the game evolved and some many unexpected twist and the endings!
3) The Weapon. ****, more weapons like hell! You can buy them off of other real players to in the market and you can sell your own weapon to other players too for profit. There are so many weapons in the whole game!
4) How to play. I like how you play the game. Mouse clicks to attack with your weapons, ASDF to move, E to throw **** and pick stuff up. Basic and simple yet fun.
5) Characters. SHAZAM! Now there are 6 characters with a new one out! There is Lann (Twin Blades/Spears), Fiona (Sword/Hammer with Shield/Long Shield), Evie (Staff/Scythe), Karok (Pillars/Cestus), Kai (Long Bow/Short Bow), Vella {NEW} (Twin Blades).
6) If I remember, it was nominated the best MMORPG back in 2011 or 10... I havent kept up with the game lately with so much schooling.
7) People. The game is so beat it needs over 200 servers to hold all the characters in the game.
8) BOSSES. BIG *** BOSSES.
9) PVP anywhere, anyplace, anytime. As soon as you are in a quest, you can pvp anyone as long as the opponent accepts.
I know, all you ******* out there who think stupid **** Wizard101 and Pirate101 (In other words, 5 year olds) might be saying "This game has to have downsides." True, it does have some but few that really affect the game in general! But at least I don't have to pay to play the whole thing!

1) Lag. **** most games have this problem. Although if you have a good computer and internet that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Only thing is that if you join a party to go raiding and the host internet suck, well, it may lag on you but not too much.
2) Long *** downloads. Look, if you don't have good internet and fast one either, It can take up to a day or 8 hours to download. If you have a Medium or high quality, you can download it within 4-7 hours maybe.
3) Gender Lock. Crap, for example, Lann is always a guy, Evie is always a girl, Fiona is always a girl, Etc.
4) Sign Up Problems. When I tried the sign up I had problems but no worries. Nexon created Vindictus making the game site linked with things like Maplestory and Combat Arms. I just went to Maplestory and made a account there and used it on the Vindictus site.

That was all the downside I could think of...

And so I advise you to play Vindictus for the following reason that I will repeat. Good game play, story-ling, players, weapons, graphics, and more. Sure there are downside but as you notice, only minors. I hope you take the chance and play the epic game Vindictus. Try it or at least look at it over YouTube! It takes place in the medieval times too! :D

Best Gaming Rig Possible 2011?
Q. I'm creating the best gaming computer possible for 2011 my budget is $15,000 I'm sure i can afford anything.

at this moment my specs are:

CPU: Intel Core i7 990X Extreme Edition, 3.46GHz (3.73GHz Turbo), 6 CORE, 12MB CACHE, LGA1366

GPU: Asus Nvidia ENGTX5802DI1536MD5 GTX580, 1536MB GDDR5, 782Mhz, 2x DVI, mini-HDMI, PCIE2.0, DX11

MOBO: Asus CROSSHAIR-IV FORMULA AMD Mainboard - 4x DDR3 / 6x Sata Raid / Gigabit Lan / AM3

Optical Drive: Lite-On SATA Blu-Ray & DVD/CD Writer (12x Blu-Ray Write/ 20x DVDRW/ 48x CDRW) - Black

HDD: Western Digital VelociRaptor 600GB 10000RPM 32MB SATA 6Gbs

Case: Thermaltake Level 10 - Black Full Tower (No PSU)

Cooling: Noctua NH-D14 All-In-One Extreme Performance CPU Cooler

PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 1500W ATX Power Supply with Cable Management SLI & EPS support

OTHER SPECS:

Speakers: Logitech Z5500D 5.1 THX Speakers

Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium PCIE Fatal1ty Champ Series - Gaming X-Fi I/O drive included

Keyboard: Logitech G19 Gaming Keyboard USB

Monitor: Samsung 27" P2770HD ROSE-BLACK LCD - 5MS / WUXGA 1920x1080 / DTV-TUNER / D-SUB / DVI / HDMI / AV / SP

all up is $6,000+ which is a lot but i don't mind.

A. Pointless overkill
Games are just now starting to use quad core so that 990x is a waste for gaming
Most games barely use 4GB of ram so 24GB for gaming is a waste
A SSD would be a better investment then the VelociRaptor
Unless you're planning on running 4 GTX580s that 1500w PSU is a waste
The Noctura i find to be just silly when you're spending $6,000 on a system with 1.6 of it just going to the CPU, spending that much money might as well go watercooled especially if you plan on overclocking
I don't see the point in getting a 27" monitor if the res is no higher then 1080p which most 22" monitors can do

This is nowhere near being the best possible rig for now and some of it is pointless for gaming

Can video games make you insane and violent?

Q. I mean that literally. Can games make you lose touch of reality and make you violent and even kill someone?.

Or is it just that these people were already mentally flipped out in the head before they played any games and probably would have killed someone anyway.

There's someone here who thinks the general public would believe his ridiculous views and all agree that games make you violent. I'm even going to post this in the mental health section to avoid bias from gamers.

A. computer games can only cause violence or any other mental issue in kids that dont know any better or in people that already have issues but it shoudnt be up to the games industry to censor itself and avoid making adult rated games purely for a minority of people who shoudnt be allowed near them-it shoud be peoples own responsibility or their family/carers/support staff etc who control what they play, in the end its all gamers who pay the price when we do not get freedom of choice,we get loads of movie licenced bugged out unfinished crap but indie developers cant take risks and are shutting down or being bought out.

parents are some of the biggest spenders of games for their children-yet to many lack the responsibility to say no and buy them games like GTA and then blame the shop they bought it from, the games industry and developers why their child copies stuff.
they shoud make people sign a disclaimer with every game bought,so that no one can blame the game for directly causing mental issues.

in own view manhunt [however short it was] was one of the most addictive games of the playstation twos history, yet a limited amount of adults have ever got to play it because it was either banned or shops refused to stock it due to the violence,it actually shot up the game charts at one point thanks to the ignorant non gamers and parents who complained itd turn their kids or adults violent, but the limited amount of copies available made sure its popularity woudnt last.
if manhunt caused people to be violent, there woud be quite a few of us on the streets walking around putting tesco bags over peoples heads and strangling them and using cheese wire to slit throats but thats not being happening, with all the copies of the hugely successful need for speed series-why isnt every gaming driver a boy racer?
the worst complainers of violent games are people who are not even gamers themselves so will never have a balanced view, the closest have ever seen to a balanced view from a non gamer was the report from supernanny-jo frost a few years ago,the one she was asked to do for the government on how violent games affect children.

its clear that people who do injure/have violence problems [whether to others/themselves or to game pads even] have issues going on that are not compatible with violent games.
look at the boys who tortured and murdered the young boy-jamie bulger years ago, they blamed the film childs play and there was huge hatred towards it suddenly from people wanting it banned.
but those boys were both mentally disturbed already.

many people slam their game pad down after losing in a game, that isnt the games fault its the person to blame as they cant cope with losing.

Why does gaming as a hobby get highly critisized?
Q. For some reason, computer gaming gets a lot of criticism from non gamers as nothing more than a waste of time. In my opinion, the whole waste of time thing is mostly due to society's stigma of gamers. Just like people who say gamers have no lives. They tell us more harshly that gaming is a waste of time. But yet, fantasy football or going to the movies is never criticized at all. But gaming is seen as a threat. Why is that?

A. Gamers believe that gaming is fun. Plain and Simple. But others think its a waste of time or its bad for the brain. There are a whole lot of different negative comments to gamers. Personally I like Gaming. It's a hobby when you need something to do, or when you are dying to play. There are more negative comments about gaming then positive comments. People even think designing games is not really a job. People who don't play video games think its for nerds, but celebrities play it. The last thing is that people HATE gamers that are popular on YouTube. They think is stupid how you get paid money to play games. Whiteboy7thsreet, SkytheKidR5 and any other gamers. If you enjoy gaming, then play. Dont let others try to tell you it sucks.

Will this computer work for light gaming and internet surfing?

Q. I do light gaming (TF2 or Minecraft), and I surf the web a lot, I know it isn't much, but could this computer get it done?
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-AM3470G-UW10P-Desktop-PC-with-AMD-Quad-Core-A6-3620-Accelerated-Processor-4GB-Memory-500GB-Hard-Drive-and-Windows-7-Home-Premium-Monitor-Not-I/19714387#Item+Description

A. Great for Internet surfing, but less than average for gaming. You might be able to do "light gaming" on it, but don't be too disappointed if it doesn't. After all, it doesn't have a video/graphics card. You get what you pay for. You aren't going to get a gaming computer for $400.

Is this a good computer for light gaming?
Q. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Desktop+with+AMD+Athlon%26%23153%3B+II+X4+Quad-Core+Processor/9549401.p?id=1218122580360&skuId=9549401
By 'light gaming' I mean that it can play all current games, but maybe not with all the high end settings.

A. It's good for light gaming provided you install a standalone video card to replace the integrated GeForce 9100, which is useless for games.

Off-the-shelf bargain computers usually don't have strong enough power supplies to handle midrange graphics cards, so the best you could install without replacing the psu would be a Radeon 4670.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161287

If you upgrade the power supply, you could install gaming cards like the GeForce 9800GT, Radeon 4850/4870 and GTS 250/GTX 260.

Whichever graphics card you purchase, buy it online- Best Buy is way overpriced on those.

Best gaming laptop under $400?

Q. So I know you cannot get the best gaming laptop out ere. But I want the best gaming laptop for this budget. It really doesn't have to be one that provides the best graphics (because I would only play stuff like lord of the rings battle for middle earth and day z. I would also want the Internet to be moderately fast on it (I have a connection that's very fast, but I notice that some computers themselves are slow on the Internet and that's something I definitely do not want)

WHY DOES MY COMPUTER CRASH WHENEVER I OPEN AN MMO GaME?
Q. it used to be so fast it wasn't like this before
i have already been playing this for almost 2 years this is the first time it happened

components are brand new

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ 1.83 GHz, 512 MB of RAM

please help me

A. Have you checked your temperatures ? If not, you should.

If you've played these games before without any problems then there should be no reason why you cant play them right now as long as you're playing the same games you have played before (since newer games = better hardware).

Try checking your computer for dust, an overheated computer can cause games to slow down and not work as smooth as they once used to.

If dust overheating you computer isn't the problem then the best advice I can give you is to pop in your windows CD and start all over even though I doubt you'd like this idea. Another thing you can do is upgrade your hardware since what was good hardware for MMO's 2 years ago is trash now.

Goodluck!.

Good Gaming Computer?

Q. Hey guys! I'm looking of a new gaming computer from a trusted company. I do not, I repeat DO NOT want to build my own. My budget is around $650 because I'd want to buy a monitor if it's a desktop. I would mostly be playing
Team Fortress 2
Minecraft
GTA San Andreas
The Sims 3
If you could help me out that would be great!

A. Well, most of these games can be played with an everyday computer. Depending on Graphics Quality, Details Settings, etc. with each game.

Overall, I would recommend an Intel i5 Processor, anything but an Intel 3000 Graphics Chip, and a good 3GB-4GB of RAM.

If you plan on a Desktop for under $650 with those specs, including a monitor, good luck! I suggest you plan on a higher budget.

Now, onto brands.

One brand I recommend you look at last, is Dell. Low quality.

Acer, HP, Sony, etc. All good brands to start with. Although a Dell may give you the most options.

I will build you an HP Computer, and then a Dell computer. I will attempt to keep the Price under $650, but will not go over $700.

1st - Click this Link: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=desktops&a1=Category&v1=Everyday+computing&series_name=p7xt_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/desktops/Everyday_computing/p7xt_series

2nd - Select "Customize and Buy"

3rd - Upgrade to these Specs: Under Processor, select the first Intel i5 Processor. (+$80)
Under Graphics Card, select the 1GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT520 (+$100)

Your total price should come to $630. No monitor, but good specs. You could probably manage to get away with the 512MB AMD Radeon Graphics Card, but I don't know how that would perform on GTA. This would save you $50, giving you a total of $70 towards a monitor, rather than the $20 previously.

Here is the Dell I would Recommend.

1st - Click this Link: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dddwbg1&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&model_id=inspiron-570

This should be good enough to play all of those games. But, I am once again only worrying about GTA... It should do fine on Low, or Medium settings though.

Your total would come to $550, includes twice as much RAM as I suggested (8GB), a smaller Hard Drive than the HP, a decent Graphics Card, an i5 Processor, and a 20" Monitor.

So, there you go! A computer $100 under your budget, with a monitor.

Decent specs, worth the money. Even if it is a Dell.

I hope I helped! Both of these computers should do just fine!

Is this a nice gaming computer?
Q. CPU-Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz
RAM-2x2GB Patriot Viper DDR3 1333MHz
GPU-2x ATi Radeon HD 4870 CrossFire
Motherboard-Intel DX38BT
Hard Drive-WD VelociRaptor 10K RPM
Case-Thermaltake Armor Series Full Tower
Power Supply-Antec 1000W TruePower
CPU Fan-Zalman CNPS9700
Monitor-28" ViewSonic Piano Black 1920x1200

My goal was too keep it under $3000, and I did. I think I made a pretty nice computer.
That dude said I could get these specs for under $2000? He doesn't know what he's talking about. And I don't need 500GB of storage space, people don't realize that that is absurd for the average person. And too the guy that said I should get at least a core 2 duo, I have a Core 2 Quad...
To the guy that said Core 2 Duo's are better, I have something too say. I know of two games, Crysis, and Unreal Tournament 3, that are encoded too use all 4 cores, and games that are coming out will also be encoded too use all 4 cores. And, why would gamers who want the best hardware buy core 2 extreme quad-cores, when they could buy E8500s? Because some of the newer games, and the new games coming out take advantage of all 4 cores.
LOL, one guy said that I need too upgrade my 2 4870s too one 8800GT. LOL.
NO, NO UPGRADES. I will have this computer for the next 25 years.

A. Oh yeah--you be rocking. Id trash the quad and go with an E8500 Core 2 Duo. Games aren't quad pumped so a quad is a waste of 2 cores. On Exotic Air I got the 8500 over 4 Ghz and run it at 3.8 24/7-(9.5X400 with 1600FSB) -try that with that quad. Quads don't overclock as well as duals. You want a giant dual for an extreme gamer. I just built a rig with an Asus X48 board 4GBs of dominator and 2 4870s in CF--Runs Crysis at very high so make sure you have your seatbelt handy. I'd consider an Asus board thou. Thats all I use. I assume that Intel board is one of the few Intel boards you can overclock. It would be a pity to built a rig like that and not be able to clock.
Oh if you already have the quad then clock the heck out of it--got the cooler for it.
Youre right about the dude saying you can build it for 2 grand. How does getting a friend to build it for you make the parts $1000 less?LOL
The people ragging on the cost need to get a clue. TRUE high-end gaming rigs cost a LOT of money to build. Youre not going to own Crysis or get 18,711 on 3Dmark2006 with a $500 Dell.
I have an Extreme in my XP gaming rig. If I thought a QX9770 would be the way to go that is what I would have put in this rig, I read a comparision of 2 gaming towers doing gaming benchmarks one with the 9770 and one with the 8500 and clocked at the same speed the 9770 had nothing on the 8500 so why spend 1200 more for nothing? So you can encode Crysis to run on all 4 cores? I max it out and I don't have to do any silly encoding. When the new Intels come out is when I'll add cores. I wanna run fast now not 6 months from now.
LOL--here's some benchmarks for the guy who suggests "upgrading" to a single 8800GT:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3341&p=20
Nice thing about the X38 board is it runs both slots at X16. I contacted ATI anf asked them if the P45 board with X8 per slot could handle the massive bandwidth of the 4870s DDR5 and they confirmed that it wouldn't and 2 in CF on a P45 board would be a total waste of money. Thats why i went with the X48 board. Nice build. Good luck with it.

What is the cheapest gaming computer?

Q. Looking for a new cheap gaming computer that can run modern games good

A. What price do you call Cheap and what games?
Also are you expecting to play the games at low setting or medium to high setting or max the game out .
With a cheap Gaming desktop you wont achieve a lot .
But at least putting a price would help

cheapest gaming desktop?
Q. looking for a new desktop that can play games like gta iv, black ops, etc. im not really onto high settings. medium is fine.

so any recommendations for a cheap gaming desktop and the specs of it and also price.

A. gaming computers aren't cheap. generally they are 600+ for a decent one. really the thing that separates a gaming computer from a regular computer is 3 things.
1)the RAM. the amount of ram your using directly effects how large of a game you can handle, more ram=larger game. most computers now come with 4 or more GB of ram which is all you will need for black ops. its how fast the ram reads that is what reduces lag. a faster reading card will keep your game smooth.
2)processing power if your processor runs at a low speed, which is measured in GHZ then the game won't run well.
and 3) your graphics card. probobly the single most important peice of hardware. your graphics card is what makes your computer able to understand and display all the data that it needs to. the speed of a graphics card is measured in GBPS. and many computers come with low storage graphics card. generally, graphics cards that come stock in computers have 223, to 556mb of storage on them, which won't do. i had a 223mb graphics card in my computer, and Bad company 2 was flashing black and white. thats how necessary it is to get a graphics card that can handle it. i upgraded to a PNY Geforce 240 1gb model and im very impressed. rather than buying a new computer, i spent 170$ on a new graphics card and it works wonderfully.

those are the things you should look for when it comes to getting a gaming PC. i never owned a specially designed gaming PC so i cant tell you what to get. but the graphics card is what most directly effects it.

Yes but a word of advice, I am big windows user and not really fan of Apple but when it comes to video editing, Windows is horrible for video editing, I have been through many video editing software for windows and have been disappointed constantly. When I was in highschool I got used to using Apple's FinalCut Pro and sometimes (although rarely) iMovie. But Macs are expensive and the price of FinalCut Pro is around the same price of the computer it is running on. But for gaming that computer is great for gaming, just don't expect to run Crysis on high settings (which takes a godly computer to do so). But for games like Bad Company 2 and Modern Warfare 2, you would be able to run those on max settings.

is this computer anygood for like gaming and video editing?

i edit with stuff like sony vegas.... and i only do light gaming.

A. well my computer is weaker than yours and I have no problems doing any gaming or video editing, I just recommend you do low-end games and light editing, it won't do anything high end but for low end work it will do just fine, I am still learning how to edit videos and I am having problems doing it
