Is a 512mb graphics card good for computer games?

Q. I need to get a new graphics card for my computer and it has to be PCI express x16. I just need one to play games on my computer without paying a ridiculous amount of money.

A. It depends on the game that you want to play and memory is not the only thing that can decide the performance. You have to consider gpu clock, vram clock, gpu nus width etc. Games based on DirectX 9c will run pretty good on 512mb graphics card. You can try Nvidia 9400gt. But newer games will not run on 512mb gpu with optimal performance.

Will it hurt my computer if I plaly any steam games if I dont have a graphics card?
Q. Will it hurt my computer if I plaly any steam games if I dont have a graphics card? If so how can I get a good enough one at a cheap price. I heard it matters by what kind of computer you have to get a certain card. Is that true. I have a Dell and Windows XP. That's all I know about my computer.

A. You can't hurt your computer by running programs off of Steam. They might not work at all (due to the lack of a dedicated graphics card in your system), but you can't break anything.

The answer to which graphics card is the right one for your computer is a little harder to answer, since it does in deed depend on your PC (or more precisely your PCs Motherboard). There are three kinds of interfaces that could be present on your Motherboard that graphics cards can be connected to: ISA, AGP and PCI.

If you tell us the model number of your Dell PC I can tell you what kind of interface you have available. (If you don't know the model number, run the "System Information" tool in your "START menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools" folder, it will tell you).

"Cheap price" is open to interpretation, but click on the link below to see some recommendations for different price ranges and bus types. I buy most of my computer equipment online from Newegg, so I added a link for them as well. I don't work for them or have any other affiliation, I'm just a satisfied customer.

Feel free to contact me directly if you have more detailed questions.

Is my computer able to handle this game (mainly my graphics card)?

Q. Guild wars 2- Min System Req

-Intel® Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, Core i3 OR AMD Athlon 64 X2, or better
-2 GB RAM
-NVIDIA® GeForce® 7800, ATI X1800, Intel HD 3000, or better (256 MB of video RAM and shader model 3.0 or better)

I have

-Intel Core i7-2670QM CPU @2.20GHz 2.20GHz
-8.00GB RAM
-NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M ---- Intel HD Graphics Family

I know i have plenty of RAM and my CPU should be alright. But It looks like my graphics card is not even close. Will it still be able to run smoothly?

Specs for NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gt-525m/specifications

Specs for NVIDIA® GeForce® 7800
http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_7800.html

A. A few ways to check.
Since it is a laptop graphics, the easy way is
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
Plays on low settings as no problem.
Look above and below the GT 525M at the Guild Wars 2

You can also do this:
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=684&game=Guild%20Wars%202
Can I Run Guild Wars 2

Otherwise, the hard way, is finding the G3D scores of the minimum and your G3D score, and compare:
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php
Your score: 588
GeForce 7800 GS: 487

If you notice also, your built into the CPU is HD 3000, which runs it at minimum.

Game Debate of high level gamers likes at least 35 frames per second on less than the absolute minimum. They think you should have a stronger card, but that just means it works on low for casual gamers, but would be disappointing play for hardcore gamers.

How to get sounds from a DVD while playing a computer game on a laptop?

Q. Is there a way to play a DVD in the backround of a laptop computer while playing a vcomputer game at the same time? I like to have movie sounds in the backround while I play computer games but I think having both pictures is bad for the video/graphics card. Is there a way to just get the sound in the backround so I don't damage my comp?

A. Start the DVD. (I'd use the VLC player.)
Minimize the player.
Start the video game.
Movie will continue to play while minimized

What is a good sized graphics card to get for computer gaming?
Q. I like my computer. It has good ram, memory, and processing speed, but its graphics suck. I can deal with playing on lower-medium graphics, but I would prefer being able to see how the game was meant to look. So in summary, what size graphics card should I get for a gaming computer. (Windows)

A. GTX 560 ti
GTX 650
AMD 7770 (best price for performance in my opinion)
AMD 7850

How would i upgrade my ram and graphics card on my Gateway-E155C laptop?

Q. here's a link with all the specs
i know its not the greatest of laptops,
but i like it the only problem is that
im into computer gaming and my graphics
card and ram aren't exactly the best.
My tech friend who's really computer
smart tells me that my laptops
system is in bulk
and would be extremely expensive to upgrade
i personally have little clue
what this means
but if any one could help me
or give me tips to how to upgrade
my card and ram it would
be MUCH appreciated!

A. RAM would not be so hard to upgrade in a laptop as long as it has an available slot. You could google your laptop to see what type of RAM it takes, and then order some online.

Now your graphics card, if you even have one, is built in to the chipset that is in your laptop. Unlike desktops, you simply can't just buy a graphics card as there are no slots built into your chipset on your laptop.

If you are in to computer gaming, perhaps a laptop is not the best option for you. Laptops that are even capable of running current games to the level expected cost $$$.

What graphics card would fit me best within my budget?

Q. I'm generally looking for a decent computer gaming graphics card for under $100. I have been wanting to play games like Smite, Civilization 5, and Total War: Shogun II for a while, but my computer's current graphics card can't handle it. As the question implies, I'm wondering what is the cheapest graphics card I can get that is at least decent and will play all of the games that I mentioned earlier and possibly more games of the same graphics caliber. Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

A. Nvidia gtx 550ti cyclone oc edition or gtx 560 , or amd's 6650 , depends on ur budget . Thanx...

How do you select a graphics card for gaming in Windows 8 Consumer Preview?

Q. I want to play a computer game on my laptop running Windows 8 Consumer Preview, but it always comes out with the error "No graphics card detected that supports shaders; please wait for us to implement a shader fallback path." I believe that my laptop is not using the higher end graphics card to run this game, but I don't know how to make it do so on Windows 8. Any Ideas?

A. You could check the manufacturer of your graphic card's website, and try and download the latest, maybe beta driver for your card. I downloaded a beta driver from NVidia for my laptop, and games work great now on Windows 8.

What is the best desktop computer for gaming that is cost-friendly?

Q. I need a decent computer for gaming. Its' graphics card needs to be able to handle games like World of Warcraft without getting to hot or laggy. My budget ends at $400.
I think you missed the part where I said my budget ENDS at $400. Those are $4000 computers...

A. The pc Alexander suggested has a poor intergrated graphics card (ATI Raedon HD 3000), although it is in budget.

Seriously though, for $400, or on any budget for that matter you will get a better pc if you build one from parts than what you will if you buy an off the store shelf one. First of all, you pay middle mans tax then you pay for stores high profit margins!

I haven't specced up a gaming pc for $400 before but I'll give it a shot :)

EDIT:

I've tried my best and i've got it down to $432.91 with a Windows 7 disc as well. There is a $15 rebate on the graphics card so effectivly you'll be getting the pc for $417.91. Save up a little more, raid around the house for loose change and get this ;)

I've done the hard bit, building is the fun part. If you don't know how to build a pc take a look at this tutorial, this is one of many on the internet.

first 2 videos in this search result, part 1 and 2

Hope i've helped!
