Q. I'm looking for a gaming computer that will run on full settings and will not be laggy. I mostly play Dayz and I want a computer that can handle that and a bunch of games easily. I don't know much about computers and I don't want to spend of 1200$

A. It is OK, but is flawed by the motherboard.
SATA II only, despite the SATA III HDD. 1333 MHz 2 stick max. USB 2.0 instead of 3.0. PCIe 2.0 knocks about 6% off your GPU performance.
The GTX 660 ti and i5-3470 are good choices if not for the old motherboard.

Assassins Creed III should be high 30's FPS on ultra being drawn down from the 44 average by the motherboard.
Minecraft and TF2 will max out. Crysis 3 does not release until February 2013 and exact gaming level is not known but should be OK. C-3 should not be much higher than Crysis 2 requirements.
That should max out Crysis 3.

Although the motherboard is disappointing, the system as a whole should be acceptable.
Games that ultra will not work very well (below 30fps) are:
Hitman: Absolution (2012), Sleeping Dogs (2012), and, Metro 2033 may be a bit marginal without some tone-down in top settings. The Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings does not get Ubersampling, but that is reserved for top end SLI systems only.

Needless to say, this is a learning experience and a fun way I figured to blow off a $1500 bonus from work. Here is the kind of gaming computer I would like.

I want to be able to play games like Kill-Zone, so I need a computer that can handle the graphics.
However, I also want to be able to play old games from 2003-2006 (If I need to rip out parts from older computers I will).
I also like to download a lot of things on my computer. Like, a lot!
I also like to multitask.

Help me choose the best parts to build a computer build?

Q. Lately I have been thinking about building a computer rig. I decided to use a forum post to do so.


1. What is the purpose of the computer? (Note: If you are planning to say multimedia, you will have to be more specific as all types of systems are capable of doing that)
Programming. - Visual Studio 2012, Microsoft Office 2012, Compiling, Graphics, Adobe Master's Collection ( Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Fireworks ). Very very little gaming will be done. This rig is not intended to be a gaming rig.

A. $3000 is beyond overkill for such a machine. However, it sounds like this is a business machine and therefore I suggest you buy a business class workstation from a Tier 1 manufacturer because you don't want to be troubleshooting stuff by yourself while your money-making computer is down. you want to call someone and have them send the replacement part overnight.

but replace the i3 with an i7-3770 (not the K version since you won't be overclocking) and upgrade the 64GB SSD to the 256GB Samsung 840 in the other build. You'll still be well below $1000 so invest in a nice monitor, maybe one of the 27" 1440p models since I know developers like their real estate space. The onboard GPU in the i7 is more than enough to power that resolution for software development and the occasional flash based game.

How much computer stuff would I need to play Rome Total War 2 for optimum performance and graphics?

A. Well it's not released yet, so nobody is 100% certain right now. However, it's going to have a new engine and people expect it will have similar requirements to Total War: Shogun 2.

So basically, that means a desktop computer around $800-$900. The bottom-line specs you'll want:

1 - Core i5 processor (2nd or 3rd generation)

2 - At least 4GB of RAM (almost all new systems come with 8GB anyway)

3 - A graphics card around $125-$150, at least a Radeon HD 7770 or GeForce GTX 560 SE. Get a $170 card like a GeForce GTX 560 or Radeon HD 6870 and you'll be way in the clear.

Building from scratch is the best option, as pre-built systems typically don't have good graphics cards. You could always buy a $600 computer from Best Buy and upgrade the graphics card and power supply yourself, or pay a tech to install 'em for you. If you're planning to play on a full HD monitor (1920x1080 resolution) then you should get a 2GB graphics card. But the card model is more important than the memory. Don't think for a second that a $60 card with 2GB would work. You'll need a gaming-level card, like this:

Q. I've been looking on sites like dell.com, and you know other computer websites, and it seems that if you buy a older pc model with newer parts than it is alot cheaper and would run better, is this true?

A. It depends upon how you plan to use the computer.

If you write papers using windows wordpad or Microsoft Word, use spreadsheets, powerpoint presentations, chat and IM, email and perhaps listen to music or watch an occassional You Tube
or other television, and you facebook or online date, an older PC with at least a Pentium 4 at 2 gigahertz is sufficient, and an 80 gig hard drive. Minimum 512 megabytes preferably 1 gigabyte.

However, if you plan on storing music and videoes, and you want to burn CD's or DVD's or you want to use a TV tuner card, you need at least 2006 year technology, which means an Athlon dual core or an Intel core 2 duo. You would need at least 1 gigabyte of ram too. This is
also important if you want to run an operating system such as Window 7 or Vista (Vista had problems, only get it if it is already installed on the older computer you are buying) .

HOWEVER, if you are a gamer, especially if you play highly graphical role playing online games
such as Star Wars - The Old Republic, YOU WILL NOT LIKE AN OLD COMPUTER.

I am not a gamer so I don't understand this fully, but those who play that game are always complaining about processors that seem extremely fast to me. If you are a gamer or plan to
be one, you need a 4 core 8 thread intel processor such as an i7 955 and an extremely powerful
graphics card. That means 2011+ technology such as a radeon hd 6850 graphics card and either
an intel i5 or i7 processor, OR an AMD Phenom ii x4 processor from 840 to 955 or higher. If it is
x6 or x8, that is even better. The x number is the number of processor cores on an AMD processor. If you want to watch Blu Rays or other 1080p multimedia, you need an extremely
powerful processor, although intel i3 or AMD Athlon ii's of at least 2.5 gigahertz should be sufficient.

IF YOU ARE NOT A GAMER, those expensive processors are unnecessary, a simple dual core
is more than enough to accomplish every nongaming task I can imagine (with the possible exception
of multimedia, converting a movie from one file format to another- or working with high definition
video content.


In 2012, you don't, for any task, want any processor older than a Pentium 4, except possibly
if you run Ubuntu or other Linux, a Pentium iii of 1 gigahertz will run ok, for basic tasks.

I would only buy a Pentium III box if it were $12 or less. Pentium 4 boxes upto 1 gigabyte of ram
and up to a 120 gig hard drive WITH A LICENSED COPY of Windows XP should be $110 or less
new and $50 with the licensed XP if used. If you have to get your own Windows XP, then the box should be $40 or less, not including your monitor or including a CRT monitor.

I experience derealization. How can I make it go away or deal with it without the overwhelming fear?

A. In the year 999, many people believed that the coming of the millenium would be the end of the world. IT DIDN'T HAPPEN! Similarly, with 1999: IT DIDN'T HAPPEN! And Y2K and the computers crashing: IT DIDN'T HAPPEN! And when the planets lined up: IT DIDN'T HAPPEN! Now, it is 2012: IT WON'T HAPPEN!!!

Only use a small hand mirror to check appearance, so just a small part of the body may be seen at a time, yet anything wrong will still be immediately apparent; cover (taping over/painting) full length mirrors. It is important to regularly monitor, and deal with a negative internal monologue (self talk), or mental process, such as disturbing thoughts, images, impulses, or emotions, by the process of (a): recognising it, and (b): challenging it immediately.

You see them coming at you and you hold out your red matador's cape at arms length and simply let them charge right by. Set yourself a specific time period for worrying about anything, (say; around three quarters of an hour, possibly when you get home, or after your evening meal, but not too close to bedtime) after which, resolve firmly to refuse to even entertain the thought of worrying again on that day: realise and accept that to do otherwise would be counterproductive to your mental health, and enjoyment of life. You will have had your "worry time" for the day, and can just write down any more thoughts that come to mind, and say to yourself: "Well, I'll just have to worry about that tomorrow, won't I?".
