Which computer will run games better ? ?

Q. 1st computer specs

Intel core i7 3770 3.4 ghz , turbo boost 3.9
Dual channel 4 gb ram. 1.333 MHz
Intel hd4000 integrated graphics
All in one h77 intel chipset motherboard

2nd computer

Amd fx4100 quad core 12 mb cache 3.6ghz
Am3 + fx motherboard
Ati radeon hd7770 1gb
4gb DDR3 1333

I'm looking to play wow n other games

A. Uh... since gaming performance is determined 70% by your graphics card, computer #2 wins by a landslide... no, more like by a continent being dropped from orbit ;)

It doesn't matter that the Core i7 3770 is a much more powerful CPU, that's not the biggest factor determining your performance in games (except strategy titles like SC2 and Civ5, and you still need a decent graphics card)

Intel's HD Graphics 4000 performs about like a $50 standalone graphics card. It gets less than 1/4 the fps of a Radeon HD 7770.

Computer #1 is far superior for video editing, but for gaming it can't compete without a real graphics card.

Can someone explain the idea here: when building a gaming computer GPU is more important than CPU?
Q. I mean I've read this on countless forums and I have no idea why people believe this. I for one don't agree with it for the simple reason that three years down the line which one of the two will you be able to upgrade? The GPU. Your CPU, which should be an Intel for gaming comps, will have an outdated socket in three years or so and when it does come time to upgrade you wont be able to get any new CPUs that fit into your motherboard and will have to run new games with what is now a low end CPU. Whereas if you got the highest end CPU you can afford and just a mid grade GPU 3 years down the line you'll be able to run the games on what will be now a mid grade CPU and a High End GPU.

Is it just a lack of foresight that dictates this view?

A. You're correct that it's much easier to upgrade a GPU than a CPU, assuming that comes up a couple of years down the road, especially with an SLI or Crossfire motherboard. But ease of upgrading is really the only thing in favoring the CPU-first argument.

The points in favor of a high-end GPU are:

1) In most games, performance is primarily determined by the GPU. Whether it's Crysis 1 & 2, Just Cause 2, Battlefield, Call of Duty, WoW, whatever- your GPU has about 3X the impact of your CPU on overall performance. The CPU needs to be "good enough" to avoid bottlenecking, but beyond that point gains are minor compared to what a stronger GPU yields.

The exceptions are strategy games like Starcraft 2, Supreme Commander, Civilization, Dawn of War etc. In those titles, in-game fps is determined primarily by your CPU. And of course in those titles, Intel CPUs are significantly stronger (the FX-8150's dominance in Civ5 notwithstanding)

Anyway, RTS games don't generally have super-intense graphics like elite first-person shooters and MMOs, so anything of a Radeon HD 6850 level or higher is MORE than enough (in fact a Radeon HD 6770/GTX 550 Ti is usually plenty)

2) At the high-end for CPUs, what you're often paying for is higher core count. But core count is the red-headed stepchild of CPU specs when it comes to gaming. Clock speed and efficiency of Core architecture are far more important.

No games other than Civilization 5 utilize more than 4 cores, and most aren't coded to utilize more than 2-3 cores. So for gaming, 4 cores running at 3.4Ghz beats 6 cores running at 3.0Ghz. That's why AMD's Phenom II X4 975 &980 are stronger gaming CPUs than the slower-clocked X6 1100T and 1090T.

3) CPU horsepower is currently WAY ahead of what's needed for modern games. The very top-end CPUs provide significant advantages over mid-grade CPUs for tasks like movie editing, professional design/rendering and heavy-duty scientific work, but NOT for gaming. In the gaming arena, the highest-end CPUs are just expensive overkill.

For example, the Phenom II X4 955 and Core 2 Quad Q9450 are quite dated, but paired with a high-end GPU they're still capable of running the highest-end games smoothly- titles like Battlefield 3, Metro 2033, Crysis 1 & 2, Skyrim etc. While Core i5/i7 is much more powerful (especially 2nd generation Sandy Bridge), the primary effect of CPU advancements has been to bring higher performance down to lower price points. A $190 Core i5 from 2011 is more powerful than a $300 Core i7 from 2009. Even a $125 Core i3 2100 matches the performance of AMD's high-end quads in many games!

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/the-sandy-bridge-review-intel-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested/20
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i5-2500-2400-2300_7.html#sect0

The Core i5 2500K has almost identical performance to the Core i7 2600K. It's actually better than the Core i7 in really CPU-intensive games like Dragon Age Origins and Starcraft 2... in those games, hyperthreading actually slows things down a bit rather than helping. But the Core i5 costs $100 less, which makes it a slam-dunk winner because those savings directly translate into a higher-end graphics card. If you're not overclocking, there's not much difference between a stock 2500 and 2400.

4) Money. Even putting bang/buck aside for a moment, the difference between a pair of CPUs $100 apart is less than the difference between a pair of GPUs $100 apart. Typically on the CPU side you might be talking about a 10-20% gain in fps. But on the GPU side, it's more like 50-100% gain.

It's the difference between a single Radeon HD 6770 and a pair running in Crossfire. Between a $50 GeForce GT 430 and a $150 Radeon HD 6850. Between a $150 Radeon HD 6850 and a $250 Radeon HD 6950. Between a $250 Radeon HD 6950 and a $350 GeForce GTX 570. You'll almost always gain fps by spending on the GPU side- your fps loss on the CPU side is much smaller.

Sockets change, I don't think there's any way around that. All we can do is pick one that appears to have some longevity, go "high-end enough" (which isn't too tough) and hope it's still popular later.

Should i get this gaming computer?

Q. Hello,

lately i have been searching for a decent gaming computer so ive gone to best buy to look and they honestly have nothing there the best that i found in tou he store was a cheap 540 dollar asus which got horrible reviews. Now i have been looking on the bestbuy website and i think i found one that i like(link will be at the bottom). Now before you look at the computer i want you to know that i am what people would say is a begginer gamer im not very knowledgable to computers and specs but i know what is a piece of junk and what is quality equipment(not going by price). So with this computer i am hoping to play games like

-company of heroes 2(medium to high quality good fps[30-40]
-total war rome 2(low to medium with decent fps)
-civilization v(medium to ultra with very good fps)
-arma 2 oa, arma 2 and dayz(low quality to whatever with enough fps to the point i can actually play the game)
-garrys mod, tf2, etc

So please tell me if i got this computer that if i could actually play the games and if you are going to suggest a computer make sure its not like 1200 dollars, my budget is about 700 max thank you.

Heres the link to the computer -------------> http://www.bestbuy.com/site/CyberPowerPC+-+Gamer+Ultra+Desktop+-+8GB+Memory+-+1TB+Hard+Drive/9177174.p?id=1218994550644&skuId=9177174

A. My Macbook Pro with a 6750M plays Civ5 (with a large amount of opponents), TF2 and GMOD on highest settings above 30FPS. I play DayZ/Arma 2 and Total war on low to medium settings at 30FPS. I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed through boot camp. If I can run it well on a laptop then you can run it even better.

Which gaming computer is better?
Q. Hi, so i went over to a friends house the other day and i played a few games on his PC. I tried out a couple of games like Company of Heroes, Battlefield 3, Starcraft 2 and Bad Company 2. I noticed that his computer performed a lot better than mine. FPS in Company of Heroes was at least 50 fps and Battlefield 3 ran so much better and without lag. I just dont get it... When i compare specs between out computers it seems like mine is the better gaming rig and yet his run so much better than mine.

My Computer
AMD Phenom (tm) II X6 1100T Processor 3.30 GHZ
8.00 GB RAM
1.0 TB HDD
Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 TI EVGA
Windows 7 64 bit.

His Computer.
Intel i5 CPU 2.80 GHZ
4.00 GB RAM
500 GB HDD
Radeon HD 5770
Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit

So i have a few questions...

1. Why does his computer run better than mine? Is it just perception?
2. Does a monitor make a difference? He has a big fancy 1920x1200 monitor and i have a older 1680x1050 monitor.
3. Is it the processor? Video Card?
4. Is there any upgrades for my computer that you guys recommend?

Thanks

A. It depends upon the specific games... but in most titles, your rig would be better, simply because your graphics card (GeForce GTX 560 Ti) is much more powerful.

On the CPU side, he's got you outclassed. AMD's Phenom II X6 1100T is weaker than their faster clocked Phenom II X4 970-980 when it comes to gaming. And Intel's 2nd generation Core i5's crush anything from AMD. No games utilize more than 4 cores, so 6 and 8 core processors don't provide any advantage for gaming.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/the-sandy-bridge-review-intel-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested/20

That's why his performance in Starcraft 2 is so much better... because that game is mostly CPU driven and in the most CPU-intensive titles like SC2, Civ5 and Supreme Commander, Intel processors are superior.
http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,766589/Starcraft-2-CPU-benchmarks-Intel-on-top-quads-without-performance-benefit/Practice/

RTS titles usually don't have very intense graphics anyway so the extra GPU horsepower of a GTX 560 Ti just sits untapped. But in Battlefield 3, Company of Heroes or Bad Company 2 you should be blowing away his results, unless you're enabling AA/AF and turning up the detail levels while he isn't.

Looks like he should be getting 30-40 fps in Battlefield 3 on high settings at 1920x1080, while you should be getting 60ish at 1680x1050
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/battlefield-3-graphics-performance,3063-8.html
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/battlefield-3-graphics-performance,3063-3.html

You sure he's got a single Radeon HD 5770 instead of a pair in Crossfire? And you've got a GTX 560 Ti, not a 550 Ti? He shouldn't get close to your results in most games.

Help with civ 5 slang and phrases?
Q. I'm kinda a noob :( and i have heard some strategies and stuff in forums but i need help.

People described a strategy where you "build a tall empire" and "get a tech advantage and pushing out", i have no idea what they mean.

Also, how do you get other civs to be afraid of you? Granted, the highest difficulty i've ever played was warlord.

And what is GG? Not great generals, the other term.

"The UA is OP, the UU and UB are UP" - what does this mean?

Also ICS and REXing?

Any extra abbreviations or terms that you know would also be appreciated.

What power supply do I need for my gaming PC?

Q. First of all, my setup works just fine when I'm gaming on sc2 and various steam games like civ5 and prime 95 type programs etc etc, so this is just out of curiosity i guess....
So my question is, do I need a bigger power supply supposedly???
I know that sounds ridiculous since it works fine with no blips at all, but why does everyone I talk to say I need a bigger power supply?
Am I just not pushing the system hard enough?
Oh, my watt consumption is like 350watts MAX during high end gaming from the wall including my speakers and monitor etc on the same surge protector.

Are power supply estimates really that far off?? Or will getting a newer power supply get me better power consumption or something ie less consumption through better power usage/ efficiency....

A. There is nothing wrong with your system. To be sure, it may even be envied by many in comparison. However, your friends who say you need a bigger power supply may be owners of the Alienware Aurora R4 which boasts incredible capabilities.

"The Aurora R4 - This is the fourth Revision of the Aurora. It is based on Intel's X79 platform (LGA 2011 socket). This model shares identical hardware with the Aurora ALX (R4). Processors include Core i7 processors only (third generation quad core and hexacore Sandy Bridge Extreme). In order of model number: i7 3820, i7 3930K (six core) and i7 3960X (six core). Sealed liquid cooling units for the processors came factory installed. The R4 is the first to use Quad Channel Memory and has Dedicated Graphics Card options from AMD's HD 6000 series and HD 7000 series line as well as Nvidia's GTX 500 series line. Nvidia's GTX 600 series line will be added later this year. Power Supply options included a 525 watt Power Supply Unit and an 875 watt Power Supply Unit. Power Supply and Motherboard supports both SLI and CrossfireX. -Note: The optional ALX chassis offers Thermal Controlled Venting, too-less/wireless Hard Drive Bays, internal Theater lighting and an extra array of external LEDs. Coupled with the TactX Keyboard and Mouse it offered up to 25 billion lighting color combinations. it makes a big penis."

can i run Civilization V on the NVIDIA GeForce 6150se nForce 430?
Q. i don't really know much about computers i want to buy this graphics card and my friends going to sell me the NVIDIA GeForce 6150se nForce 430 but it says the minimum requirement is 256 mb nVidia 7900 GS. can you tell me which ones better?

A. No, you can't run Civ5 with that.

The GeForce 6150se isn't even a real card- a really old integrated graphics chipset built-in to the motherboard. It's fine for everyday work but much too slow for games. Here's the overall hierarchy chart, as you can see the 6150se is far below a 7900GS.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html

I think your friend misquoted what he was going to sell you, unless he's trying to sell a whole computer. I don't think the GeForce 6150se exists as a standalone card, the closest you could get is a GeForce 6200 (which is still way too old & slow)

You'll need to install a graphics card. What are the specs for your computer- CPU, RAM, and power supply? The PSU rating determines which cards can be installed. If your computer is a brand-name like Dell, Acer, Compaq or HP, what's the exact model number? Is it a regular tower or a slimline/compact unit?

I hope you've got a regular desktop, since you cannot change the built-in graphics on laptops.

These are inexpensive graphics cards which would work:
