what kind of career can you get from a computer game science degree from University of California Irvine?
Q. I've been interested in going to UCI and study computer game science, but I want to know if it will be worth it. I love to play video games and I think this degree, since it has a lot to do with video games, would be something I would love to do. However, I have doubts whether graduating with that degree will get me a good paying career. What kind of career can I get with this degree?

A. You can get a job in Programing computer games, Testing Computer Games, Designing computer Games Marketing Computer Games Advertising Computer Games and Drawing Computer Games. The pay is not as good as a Computer Engineering job for the jobs I mentioned above, but if you continue and get a PHD and possibly a Doctorate in Computer Games Science and a few other majors in different computer qualifications you could possibly get a job as a Computer Game Engineer and the would be a very well paid job because you wouldn't just be making computer games but you would also be making games for PlayStations consoles, Xbox, Wii, Nintendo and other Consoles as well as inventing games.

What kind of gaming computer should i get?

Q. I'm a 16 year old girl, and I want to start gaming more. I have a crappy HP pavilion g series laptop and I want to buy an actual gaming computer, that isn't very expensive. What should I buy, and what would you recommend I do for faster computer functions and just an overall better computer. (like laptop vs desktop, and what brand)
Mike, you are speaking another language. Could someone make a little more sense?

A. First you need to buy a new PC not apple because they don't make a lot of games for a apple. I have a HP hpe 570f please google the computer because it is a little over 2 years old and my son will be playing a game on one screen while he is editing videos on another screen and he will have skype up on the third screen. He has a Phenom ll X6 which means it is a 6 core cpu or processor and the more cores you have the more things your computer can do at the same time. You will need a graphics card with at least 1 GB of DDR5. Sometimes when your looking at a computer on line it will not tell you how much DDR5 or DDR3 it has so you will need to google every graphic's card. A graphics card that has DDR3 is not as fast as the DDR5. The DDR5 cards start at $59 at tigerdirect.com which is a good web site with cheap prices. Another important part of a gaming computer is the RAM, I suggest that you have 8 GB but no less than 4 GB. And if your game starts to lag and you have the right cpu and graphics card but only 4 GB of RAM then you need to buy more RAM. You need to stick with AMD cpu's or processors because they cost less and offer more than intel because intel charges for their name. Don't buy a "gaming computer" because they charge more for calling it a gaming computer. Go to hp.com and pick desktop or laptop. The desktop will be less expensive and a better gaming computer but if you want a laptop click on normal everyday computers and then you will see lots of computers and on the right side you can click on customize and buy then you can upgrade the computer if you want. When your playing games you can go to the games settings and lower the resolution if your computer is having a hard time playing it and you can also play the game in a smaller window to help your computer. My other son which is going to college in the fall just bought a Lenovo y400 which he bought at lenovo.com and upgraded the hard drive to an Hybrid which has 16 GB of SSD and the rest the regular harddrive (HHD). The Solid State Drive has no moving parts so it is a lot quicker and it starts the computer up in 9 seconds where as the regular hard drive has moving parts so it is slower. The regular hard drive is fine but if you have extra money get the SSD or at least the Hybrid because it is less expensive. Anyway my son bought the Lenovo Y 400 on sale for $799 and it runs all the intense games on ultimate resolution on full screen. So look up both of the computers of my sons and them shop. It is always fun to buy a new computer. Have fun and enjoy!!

What kind of gaming computer?
Q. What's a good gaming computer that won't cost me alot of money. I looking for a computer that can support multiplayer game, provide average graphic settings, and also be used as a computer i can do my school work on.
Alot would be $1,500+

A. When looking to buy a gaming system it is very important to do your research so the best advice I could give anyone would be to shop around. Make sure to check the specifications of game/s you wish to play and shop for these and even more important is too read lots of reviews

Here is a great place to start these reviews provide all the information you could possibly ever want/need and all in simple easy to understand terms

A. www.runescape.com- Online Adventure Game, but more of a game then what you describe

www.gaiaonline.com- Its free, has fourms, plenty of games, and dating. Look at Gaia Towns, when you get an account!

What kind of laptop would be good for computer games?
Q. I like to play The Sims 2/3 and Nancy Drew computer games. I want a relatively cheap and good laptop for that purpose along with internet surfing, obviously. I would prefer for it to be available in stores. :)
Oops. I forgot to add that stuff. I would prefer for it to be Toshiba if that is possible, relatively light in weight, the battery life I really don't know, and I would prefer it be $0-$300 if that is possible. It doesn't necessarily have to be a gaming computer though. My cousin has a Toshiba laptop that she got for Christmas and she has around probably 20 Sims 2 games on her Toshiba...

A. Asus G74/G73 Available at your local Best Buy.

Since you did not list the basics of a laptop recommendation question, I.E preferred price, size, brand, specs, battery life, functionality, then I am just throwing my out some pennies. You did list the games you want to play, but how well you want to play them will remain unknown.

Alienware laptops are decent, though I can not and will not provide a biased opinion because I have never owned one. I mean, they are pretty ;) http://i639.photobucket.com/albums/uu114/jessybish/IMG_0307.jpg

Though I am not saying the G73/G74 isn't sexy :D

But it all comes down to performance. I want a beast gaming machine that looks as great as it performs.

What kind of computer should I buy for gaming?
Q. I love video games. I want a computer that can play them. And I plan on using this computer for a long time, so I wanna be able to play these games with the graphics on high and all that. Games like Portal 2, Skyrim, and Boarderlands. I don't like the way "Gaming Computer" sounds, but I suppose that's what I'm looking for. Here's the thing. I only have about $1000-$1200 to spend on it. Also, I don't wanna have to build my own computer. I'd like for all the parts to come in one package. Also, I'd like for this to be a Windows Desktop computer. Mac's kinda bug me. Anyway, basically I want a cheepish computer for playing these newer games with the graphics on high with no lag or anything. Can somebody help me? I have little computer experience, and I really feel helpless. I feel like I'm repeating myself too much, but I wanna really be able to run those flashy retail games and make them look good. And... I really hope it could come with a monitor. If it doesn't, I probably won't get it. I won't have any money left over to get a screen. Thank you for your consideration.

A. If you like all parts to come in package, then you will have to buy a branded pc, that is, a full desktop pc customized by a renowned band like HP, ASUS etc. But then again, they will give you less performance per price. You can find those brand pc in the respective websites or www.amazon.com or www.newegg.com. Newegg gives the best price for computer hardwares.

I am assuming, you want to game in full HD and in high settings at a good frame rate. So I recommend at least a quad core processor. You told you had only $1000-$1200 to spend on it. But with that price, you can customize an above average gaming pc.

In terms of gaming I personally prefer intel processor over AMD and nVidia graphics cards over ATI graphics card. But that's my personal preference based on reviews and benchmarks. Others could disagree. Anyway, I am giving an example here of custom gaming pc built within your budget:

1)Processor: Intel Core i5-3570K -----------------------------230$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504

Its latest generation intel ivy bridge processor and very much powerful for gaming in details.

2)Motherboard: MSI Z77A-GD65 LGA 1155----------------190$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130643

PCI express 3, USB 3 motherboard from a renowned band. Also consider Asus, Gigabyte, Asrock band.

3)Graphics Card: MSI HD7850------------------260$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127663

Its a powerful graphics card and can handle latest games easily.

4)Ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB-------------------50$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428

You can also buy CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB

They both are much powerful ram and most popular.

5) Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB -----------------120$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533

6) Optical Drive: ASUS 24X DVD Burner--------------19$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204

7)PSU: CORSAIR Builder Series 600W----------70$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028

8)Computer case: Cooler Master---------------------60$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233

9)Speaker: Creative 5:1----------------------56$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836116049

10)Monitor: Acer LED monitor full HD----------------110$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009316

11)UPS (optional): --------------------------------50-150$

That pretty much sums up to 1250 including UPS. But with rebates, prices will be drop down to near 1000$

Good luck!

P.S.: I forgot about operating system. I assumed you had that already. If you don't have buy Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1 (don't by 32 bit) for 100$
That sums upto like 1100$

Its no big deal to build a custom pc. Seek help from some of your friends who knows computer hardwares or get your hardwares assembled from a computer servicing store.

What high school classes should a kid take to get accepted into college for computer game design?

Q. My son is a sophomore in high school and wants to become a computer game designer. what kind of classes should he take while still in high school to make have the best chance at getting accepted into college for computer game design? Also, should he be doing anything extra-curricular?

A. The best course of action in high school is always to take the most challenging classes you can that your school offers. It's very important to have a base of core classes. Encourage him to take electives that he's interested in and relate to computer science and/or graphic design.
Also, extracurriculars are very important. Your son should try to develop well-rounded interests. Volunteer work is very important. As far as computer game designing goes, try to get him into some kind of computer club at his school or in your community. This will expose him to what he'll be studying in college.

How do you want your next computer game to be?
Q. Are you bored with shooters and RPGs? What kind of computer game would you want to play? If you play 3d shooters, what kind of challenge(s) would you expect in an "extremely" good game?
no suggestions but one?

A. It would be nice to see a mix of several types of games. Like a ARPGFPSMMO Diablo II style game meets FPS that you can also play online if you want.

What skills should I have to become a computer game developer?

Q. I have a BS degree in physics, but am thinking of changing my career direction to computer game development. I have basic knowledge about programming (C, java), then nothing else related to software development. What skills should I have to get ready for this kind of jobs? Thanks a lot!

A. Your assignment now is to graduate from programming to software engineering. This means you must learn about object oriented design, which means classes inheritance templates polymorphism and design patterns. Software engineering covers the process and best practices of structured development in a professional environment. It covers requirements gathering, design, implementation, testing, and agile development processes.

So while you learn this stuff you have two routes, basically you need work experience. You can apply for software development internships outside the game industry, or game testing within the industry. To go straight to game programming from a physics degree, I doubt you'll be that lucky.

In the interview they'll specifically ask questions about software engineering and object oriented programming to weed out the flakes. They will likely ask you:
1. What is the difference between overriding and overloading?
2. What is inheritance and why is it useful?
3. Do you have any experience in unit testing?

I recommend learning to test code as you write it early, this is a VERY IMPRESSIVE and VERY ATTRACTIVE trait in the industry. JUnit is a good way for a java guy to get into it. Another feather you can have in your hat is your certified education, if you can convince your interviewers you have the chops to do nitty gritty work on physics engines and optics, i don't see how that can hurt.

If you're a real self-starter you could try making a game of your own and putting it online for a hell of a resume bullet-point. Worst case, you dont get hired and you end up freelancing and being your own boss.

Another thing that came to me is to Know Your Environment! Are there game companies in commuting distance? What do they do? Who do they need?

What kind of disks would I need to copy a computer game onto another disk?
Q. What kind of disks whould I need to copy a computer game onto another disk? I want to back-up my sims 2 nightlife and university disks but what kind of disk whould I need to do that? How many GB or MB would the disk have to have?
Oh and I already have a program that copys game disks onto other disks

A. You could stick them both easily onto a DVD, with lots of space left. But it's not as simple as dragging and dropping. You'll need special software. Just google "CD Backup Tool".
