My computer screen is just too bright and white?

Q. I use Windows, and I have an x1600 ATI card. I can adjust the brightness, but colors, especially white, seem real intense and in your face, and in computer games, in dark rooms it is very hard to see (I have comparisons) and also there is the same faint white glare all over it. How should I adjust my Gamma, Brightness, and Contrast settings?

A. Hi. Most monitors have a series of buttons that control such things. The brightness sounds like it is set real high. Drop it down to, say, 50%.

What effect living in an imaginary world will have on our society?
Q. -young people spend so much time pretending to be what they are not.. in computer games etc

-chat rooms, msn, my space even second life...all examples of seclusion from the real world.

A. You are so right we have forgotten how to inter act with other humans beings as chatting on a computter is having control of what you say and if you do not like the communicational skills of another we just tune or shut down computer so now we are all solonely and bored and restless,, The society has become a bunch of pill popping to escape this and sickness is another side effect of the computer and games,,,Man was meant to intermingle with real live human beings,,,Did you know you can live longer from lack of food that being removed from our mankind, like a hug,

How do I share an Internet Connection between two sets of devices on different floors?

Q. I have a DSL Modem upstairs. It has four Ethernet ports. My computer is plugged into one of the Ethernet ports with an Ethernet cable. It connects to the Internet through the Modem.

But the problem is, my other computer, my Xbox 360, and my PlayStation 2 are downstairs. How do I get the Internet connection from the DSL Modem upstairs to work with my PC, 360, and PS2 downstairs? Do I need to buy a Wireless Router, put it downstairs, and have it wirelessly connect with the modem upstairs? I cannot run 3 Ethernet cables from downstairs to upstairs, mainly because it isn't very practical, but also because my computer room upstairs and my computer/game room downstairs are on opposite sides of the house. So how do I share the connection?

A. You will need a wireless router connected to the DSl modem. You will then need wireless adapters for the terminals downstairs. i don't know if PS2 and XBox 360 have USB 2.0 ports. To get the desired speed you'll want you'll need USB 2.0. USB 1 will work also but it will be slower. If your house encompasses more than 100 or so yds from the router you may also have connection problems. So if you live in a 25 room mansion you may need an amp to boost the signal (LOL). Seriously though, the next thing you want to do is security enable the wireless devices on your ntwk, otherwise, your neighbor may freeload off your signal and hog your bandwidth. You have to only allow the ip addresses you specify to have access to your wireless ntwk.

Where can I find some chic/modern geeky decorations for a gaming room?
Q. I was thinking about something in the lines of "Space Invaders" and "Asteroids" arcade games.
Pacman as well.

Looking for couches or sofas, those little puffs, wall decorations, anything really.
Preferably in chrome, leather, or anything in those lines. Would appreciate any help!

It's for my computer and console gaming room. Thanks!

A. Some of the best wall decorations are found on eBay in other categories. Get an old computer of some sort that does not work. They have them there, sold as non-working items. They aren't expensive. Take it apart partially and use "computer guts" in a frame as wall decor. It really does work well.

Pacman is dead-easy to make. Take a wooden circle and cut out the mouth. Sand and paint.

Can playing computer games really break your computer?
Q. Can playing computer games really break your computer? Or slow it down? or anything that is bad to your computer? I need a url so I can read it on my own, first one to do it get 10 points!

A. I'm afraid video games cannot do any damage to your computer, unless you look at it in an indirect fashion. Such as, you buy a game and install it, play it for a year, and over time, the video game's graphics requirements causes your graphics card to break in some way, or if you install a huge video game and your hard drive just doesn't have enough room left after installing it. That'd leave it sluggish.

The only way for a video game to do direct harm to your computer is if the game is pirated, meaning there is a chance a virus or some additional software has been attached to the video game, or if you just straight torrent it off of some site.

And yes, video games can slow down your computer, but only when you're playing them, and maybe shortly afterward.

I'd hate to say it, but no one is going to do a scientific study on whether or not video games can damage your computer, because they can't. You'd be better off searching for some research on whether or not video games cause brain damage than this. Sorry.

Husband addicted to computer games slacks on work=no money. How to help him?

Q. We have been married for a year and a half now and just had our first child. We only have one car and due to the baby being so little I am not able to return to work right now. My husband has steadily gotten back into computer games over the past year and it is heavily affecting us financially. He works independently at home. Every week he spends less time working and more time playing. We barely get enough money to pay our rent. Our other bills are paid by family members and it has been hard to get him to take the payments over. he is always looking for another job but never seems to stir up the courage to do what is necessary right now to get us out of the two room apartment we are currently squeezed into. We have talked about this a lot before and he has tried to kick the habit a few times before but he keeps coming back. We have dragged out the reasons and problems he has that cause the addiction but I am starting to feel like he doesnt want to change his lifestyle. He is content to live cramped up in somebody elses garage with his wife and baby and dog. I am just feeling so lost as to what to do now. I love him with all of my heart and desperately want to help him and be supportive. I believe we can make this right I just dont know how and it is wearing on me so heavily. I feel like I am bearing all the weight for the family and our relationship right now. Please help.

A. Family members are paying your bills? What is wrong with this guy. I vote no for depressed. Depressed people don't sit on video games all day instead of working to support their family. That is called being a lazy slacker.

If I were you I would get out and stay with your family members who are paying those bills. They can stop paying and maybe he will work.

Does a private server online computer game take a lot of room on your hard drive?

Q. I have several online private server computer games (the same game --different servers) and only 3 gigibytes left on my hard drive. I have a new Vista 120 gigibytes, but no more room. I did remove 4 viruses, but the viruses were removed, so where is my disk space? Maybe the servers really take up a lot of room and Vista utilizes lots of memory to carry out the computer functions? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A. hey there. Im pretty sure those server games you are talking about arent taking up that much space on your hard drive. how long have you had the computer? I dont know about vista, but try going to search or find all files or folders, then see if there is an option for size something like "what size is it" then look for specify size, then put in something like at least 50000 bytes. thats 50 megs. it should bring up all files on your computer that are that size or larger. use your judgement and delete the ones that look like they dont belong or that you never use.

hope this helps, good luck
