Q. My laptop can play Crysis (on high settings fine!) and other great offline games.

When I try online games (second life, everquest), my computer just turns off and crashes.

My video card is great!! My online connection is fine. I have a HP HDX18. Their customer service has been useless so I am cmoing here for help and it isnt my firewall

Q. i want to get a computer for gaming. my budget will be about 600-800$. i would like to play games like arma, possibly not the highest setting, but atleast play it on medium settings. I also play games like bioshock infinite and would like to play that on atleast medium settings, but if I can get anything that can run most games smoothly for about 600-800$ I'll be fine.

A. Any online service that will build you a computer is going to ask for a labor charge, and may even have a markup on parts. It'd be better to buy wholesale parts and build your own. That way you can even pick the specs you want on your system and build up to that. There is even the possibility to upgrade parts bit by bit over time, much better than replacing a whole factory-built system,

I'd say do some research, it's not as daunting as you would think. Get on Newegg.com and read up on computer components, then buy pieces that fit together and you'll have yourself a rig!

Speeding up computer for online gaming?

Q. Is there a way I can change settings on my computer to optomize it for online gaming or speed it up at all?

Im using Windows Vista if that matters...

A. 1.)get a program called gamebooster it optimizes and closes useless processes that run when you play games it also defrags yor ram and removes like 200mb for me takes like 5-20 seconds for it to be done.
2.)Update your drivers for your video card. if you use a nvidea card open the nvidea control panel and go to manage 3D settings and click the things (not the list boxes) it will give you a detailed description on each thing, if you want to use it at highest preformance and not highest qualty change the settings to this.

A. There is really nothing you can do short of lowering the resolution and the quality settings of the game.

The issue is that you have a laptop, laptops are not made for gaming. They have integrated video and you cannot upgrade the video adapter.

So, by reducing quality and resolution, you will get higher framerates = less "lag".

Internet browser and computer is very slow?

Q. All of a sudden my internet browsing become very slow. I use IE but whenever I load a page it takes time not the way it used to be. And sometimes it says about DNS server but my connection settings are fine. Sometimes it does not even load a page. I tried using Firefow and other browser but it's all the same. I tried my anti-virus which is avg pro but it does not change anything. I also tried msconfig and disabled my startup. I defrag also and run a ccIeaner but there's still a problem. have a broadband connection and it is fast. What could be the problem? Is it my internet connection? but I did not change anything? I remember I just Installed an online game before this happened then I uninstalled that game and reinstall again. But what happenned is, I can't connect to any online game because the patch of the game doesn't come out or show. My computer also become slow and sometimes it freezes. Please help.

I used frostwire and downloaded some music and it's fine and fast. My porblem is my Internet browser, I can't even surf the net and I can't download programs using my browser.

A. As you know, many factors influence computer speed. When I'm called to work on a slow computer, here are the steps I take (and in this order):

1 - Delete all cookies, temp files and temporary internet files and reboot the computer. Watch for unusualy messages as the computer boots up. Before you run the programs below, clean up (delete) your cookies, temp files and temporary internet files. I prefer to use Ccleaner (available at www.filehippo.com) to do this, rather than the built-in DISK CLEANUP. If you want to use Disk Cleanup, you can find it if you:
- Double-Click on My Computer to open it up
- RIGHT-click on your C: drive
- Choose PROPERTIES and then click on the DISK CLEANUP button
Delete these files every day or run Ccleaner every day right before you shut your computer down.

2a - Check the main hard drive free space - it must be 25% free or it will slow your computer down.

2b - If 25% or under free space, move less needed files to a CD (make 2 separate copies!) and delete from hard drive. Also uninstall programs no longer needed, via Add/Remove programs

3a - Check what is running in your Systray (by the clock). Use MSCONFIG to turn off all programs NOT needed to run all the time. For example, you don't need your CD burning software to run *until* you need to burn a CD - at which time the software will start by itself. Ditto for Adobe Acrobat! Then re-boot the computer for the changes to take effect. Win 2000 does not have a built in MSCONFIG - but there is a free version available for download on your computer from:

3b - Some of this can also be accomplished using Task Manager. Right after a reboot, open Task Manager and check for all running processes. Make a list of them! You should have less than 40 running at startup for efficient operations. At 40 and over you can have significant slowdown. Google all you are unfamiliar with and keep notes for yourself. When you find the computer slowing again, you can compare your new list of running processes to the original list and go from there.

4 - Update and run your Anti-virus program. Ditto for anti-spyware and anti-adware programs. Google the programs you are currently using for mal-ware protection to ensure they, themselves are NOT mal-ware!!! FYI - I like to use "Ad-Aware", "Spybot, Search & Destroy", and "SuperAntiSpyware", all of which
are FREE and can be downloaded from www.download.com Be careful of "look-alike" programs, with similar names to known good programs. If you need a good FREE anti-virus program, I prefer Avira to AVG, also available from www.download.com For all of these programs you will need to download, install, update and scan, one at a time. The latest AVG has been slowing down some computers GREATLY.

5 - Get rid of all unneeded programs via Add/Remove programs. ONLY remove programs you have installed yourself that you KNOW are not needed for Windows to run. It is better to be less aggressive with this, than more! Always reboot your computer after deleting several programs.

6 - Last, run Error-checking THEN Defrag. DO NOT RUN DEFRAG WITHOUT RUNNING ERROR-CHECKING FIRST! If you have a bad hard drive sector, you can hose your computer!!
You can find both of these programs by opening My Computer, right-click on the the C: drive, choose Properties. On the TOOLS tab is are two buttons, one for each program. When you run Error-checking, make sure you check both boxes to automatically fix file system error AND scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

Another source of computers slowing down:
Running a large program all the time - for example, the comprehensive anti-virus/anti-spyware/firewall all-in-one type programs. They tend to want to do too much, at the cost of speed. If you suspect this might be the case for you, turn off that comprehensive program and see if the issue goes away. If so, consider less resource-intensive programs!

A. I would suggest you to buy a Cyberpower GUA103SE from Walmart! Very nice computer, cheap price and hella fast with those settings. It can max out your top games, no problem. Just buy that and whip up a monitor and you are done. You would be good for couple of years even if you are a big gamer.

A. You need to test your connection properly before determining where the bottleneck really is to start. Try "pingtest.net" and "speedtest.net", having your main computer connected direct to the modem, (wired and no switch or router) and take notes on results. Then try the same again with switch and no other comps connected and again with other comps connected and configured how you would on normal basis. Once you've collected you result data, make sure you have no more than 40 percent loss between results from first test and any other tests (the biggest drop would indicate the bottleneck.

Furthermore, your initial test should have a ping less than 200 (under 100 is decent, under 50 is excelent) and a download speed of at least 10Mb/s (20Mb/s or more is probably desired for your application). If theses minimal connection requirements aren't met, you should discuss with your provider about better connections or change providers to one that can meet these requirements.

Your switch should be capable of 1Mb/s per channel (for a 16 port you need a 16+Mb/s switch, but you are likely to only find 10Mb/s switches. So maybe find a 10 port switch that supports the 10Mb/s.)


Final note: these are simply suggested settings for OPTIMAL connections that support many computers to game and use high bandwith application (ie: youtube) with minimal lag. Other workaround would be to have 2 or 3 connection each split into their own routers...

A. If you go into My Computer, you can set the graphics down real low. I found this helped a lot for WoW and Oblivion. I'll not go into any details from where to go from My Computer, as this laptop's real old and it would just add to the confusion. Also, you can probably set the in-game graphics down low in settings.
