Windows 8 computer games?

Q. Are there any games like GTA or Skyrim that will work on windows 8? I've tried GTA IV and had absolutely no luck. I almost regret buy a computer with Windows 8.
I figured it would be compatible as well, but I can't get it to play for the life of me.
In fact after looking on amazon where I downloaded it from, it even says not compatible... I feel retarded.

You have now found out that you can't download and install what you want with W8. You should have done some very serious research into W8 systems before you bought it. You are going to learn what W8 means to the MS Zombie the end users eventually, when you start paying through the nose for all the W8 software,

W7 software will not run on W8 systems. All software for W8 has to have the MS UEFI digital signed signature before it will install and run, and to get that you have to buy all the software from MS,

If you want to run your computer the way you want to run it, and not be controlled 100% by Microsoft then you are going to have to jail break it, MS is in business to make money, They are not in business to make the end users happy, remember that in the future.

If you want to or feel like jail breaking from W8 and Microsoft then send me a message I'll tell you how to do it.

windows 8 for gaming?
Q. I just ordered my first gaming computer, and chose windows 8 over 7 simply because its the latest.
was that a mistake?

A. I used to have Windows 8 Enterprise, It was absolutely AWFUL for gaming, Most Steam games said that you had to own a Microsoft OS to play these games, Who knows, It might work on the full release though. It's just that I was using an old computer, So, That kinda messes up my answer, :P.

I'm getting a computer dedicated for gaming, should I get Windows 7 or 8?

Q. I heard that windows 8 is sh*t for gaming and only used for tablets and all in ones, but I want a second opinion as I do not want to buy Windows 8 separately (Personally I'd radar Windows 7).

A. You heard wrong. Benchmarks show Windows 8 and Windows 7 gaming performance is so close that it doesn't matter. Windows 8 works fine for gaming computers. You can always install a free start menu if you don't like the start screen. Here's a whole list of free start menus.

Windows 8 Gaming Problems, Help?
Q. So, ever since i bought Windows 8 I have been getting many issues with the video games i download. I'm almost 100% sure that it is not the game, because when i had Windows 7 they would work fine. Games such as League of Legends, Crossfire, Age of Empire Online, etc. They would crash my computer or some would just stop working. My theory is that the games haven't updated to the Windows 8 software, but i'm not sure. Please tell me any information you have or can find about this problem, it really brings down Windows 8 customer satisfaction.

A. I also had issues after upgrading from Windows 7 to 8, especially with older games from Gametap, they stopped working or performed erratically. I decided to roll back to Windows 7 but that required a factory refresh using my computer's recovery partition. I had to restore my data and re-install all my applications afterwards.
If you decide to roll back, make sure to have the Windows 7 operating system, a data backup and application media or installation files ready.

Preinstalled Wildtangent Games no longer working on Windows 8 computer?
Q. Me husband bought me a new Gateway computer in February, running Windows 8. It came with Wildtangent Games app preinstalled, which i loved, since i played a lot of the games on old computer.
No problems for a few weeks but then suddenly the app will not load. The icon appears in the task bar, i get "the swirl" telling me it's working on opening... then nothing. If i right-click the icon and close it out, then everything is ok but if i leave the app "open" then i cannot do anything ~ cannot open another window, etc. until I close it out.
Is there a fix for this? I have even tried uninstalling WTG but it seems super complicated. I know y'all will need more info than what i've provided so please let me know what else is needed to get help with this issue and i'll provide.
Thanks ahead of time!

A. Hey, I think I have a workaround for you. This is going to get a bit technical, so try to stick with me. The overall thing I think you need to do is to erase bad window placement settings for the app. The window placement settings are recorded in a settings.ini file located in your user data folders. Getting to those folders for someone without moderate knowledge about navigating system files can be tricky.
Ultimately you are trying to get to:
"C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\
WildTangent\WildTangent Games\App\Settings\"
(I'm sorry but I had to put that file path in two lines because Yahoo! kept truncating it)

Here is a way to get there:
Open File Explorer (I always use the shortcut keys: WinKey + E)

Go to your C: drive.

Go to the "Users" folder.

Go to the folder for the currently logged in user. If your username has spaces in it, I think it will only be the first word. (ie If your username is "John Doe" the user folder would be "John")

Go to the "AppData" folder. This is the trickier part. Windows by default hides this folder because if you go into there and mess with things too much you can potentially cause a lot of problems for yourself. You have to manually add "\AppData" to what is already in the "address bar" in the file exporer window. It should now read: "C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\AppData"

Then go into the following folders "Roaming"->"WildTangent"->"WildTangent Games"->"App"->"Settings"

At this point you should be in the folder I mentioned near the beginning:
"C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\
WildTangent\WildTangent Games\App\Settings\"
(Again I'm sorry but I had to put that file path in two lines because Yahoo! kept truncating it)

From here you can either delete the Settings.ini file completely or remove all the lines under "[Placement]". On my machine those lines look like this:
[Placement]
Length=44
Flags=0
ShowCmd=1
PtMinPosition=-1, -1
PtMaxPosition=-1, -1
RcNormalPosition=320, 20, 1600, 1020

Some of the numbers will be different on your computer, but you should have the same value names (ie "RcNormalPosition" etc...). Once you have removed the strings try starting the app again and the window should pop up. Hopefully this doesn't sound too scary, the app should recover from a missing settings file with no problem so if you tried just removing the strings and it seems like something is broken you can just remove the file altogether. As long as you only modify that one file nothing else should go wrong. You could help out the people working on the app by posting what values were stored in your settings.ini file when it wasn't working so they know what values caused it to get like that.

How do I know if an old computer game will work on Windows 8?

Q. There's an old computer game I loved as a kid, and I want to see if I can track down a copy. I'm concerned that it might not work on my new Windows 8 computer though. How can I know if it will work or not? And if it won't work, is there any workaround to get it to work?

The game is called "Knights and Merchants."
If you know a good reliable place where I can find this game, that information would be helpful also.
Thank you! :)

A. You can try running it in Windows 95 or 98 compatibility mode. There's really no guarantee that it'll work though.

How do you select a graphics card for gaming in Windows 8 Consumer Preview?
Q. I want to play a computer game on my laptop running Windows 8 Consumer Preview, but it always comes out with the error "No graphics card detected that supports shaders; please wait for us to implement a shader fallback path." I believe that my laptop is not using the higher end graphics card to run this game, but I don't know how to make it do so on Windows 8. Any Ideas?

A. You could check the manufacturer of your graphic card's website, and try and download the latest, maybe beta driver for your card. I downloaded a beta driver from NVidia for my laptop, and games work great now on Windows 8.

What security software should I use for my PC?

Q. I'm running a Windows 8 computer mainly for gaming. That's pretty much all I use it for, although I have noticed that sometimes I've wandered into that unsafe, virus filled side of the internet, but very rarely. I currently use Bitdefender total security, and it's about to expire. I'm starting to wonder if i really need all the features that the 80 dollar program contains. What would be a good software for my purposes for the lowest price? Thanks in advance.

A. I'm assuming you want effective security for PC. Sorry, there really isn't true effective PC security. you're going to get a virus no matter what. True computer security: get either linux or a Mac. I use Mac and have never had a virus although I have virus protection. I used to have linux and never had a virus. The PC that I regularly use has up to 40 viruses every single time I do a virus scan...sometimes a virus cannot be removed for whatever reason so it's a huge headache to manually find it and delete it.

With PC you have to spend a lot of money in order to keep it safe, because microsoft security essentials are completely useless...100%. Mac and Linux don't require $100 a month security just to not have credit cards and passwords stolen at random every single time you log on to the internet. PC is a joke...using the internet on a PC is like having unprotected casual sex...eventually you're going to get a virus then it's too late, you're screwed...game over.

All these other posts prove my point: you spend more time trying to stay virus free and keep your files safe on a PC then actually using it for the reason you bought it. A lot of people think the Windows experience is how all computers are. It's not the case. Windows is a poorly designed operating system at best. Get Mac or Lunix and stop worrying. Linux, Ubuntu, is free and since you have Windows you already have the hardware so it is truly free except for the cost of one DVD to burn it to...so what? $1, lol better than hundreds of dollars on security programs on PCs that are never ever ever 100%.
