What is the culprit for lag spikes during online gaming?

Q. I have Vista(Gateway GT5453E) and I play this "First Person Shooter" online game, and I've been experiencing a lot of lag spikes. Can hardware components be culprits? If so, which can I upgrade to resolve this. Also, my computer takes several long minutes to load into a map room(combat arms). What could be causing this? Are these just internet phenomena or could under-performing hardware be also at fault?

Thanks!

A. The lag spikes could either be your connection failing, or you're getting visual spikes because your computer can't maintain a decent framerate for that second. After seeing the specs of your computer (2.2ghz dual core, 1gb ddr2 ram, nvidia geforce 6150se) it's definitely your computer can't keep up hardware wise. It's a pretty ancient dinosaur sorry to tell you. The way you would never most performance increase is to upgrade from that integrated graphics card to something more decent. A great upgrade would be to the hd 5670.

How to make my games run smoother?
Q. How can I make my games run smoother, and faster.
Right now my computer specs are:
DELL
Intel(R) Core 2 Duo T7200 @ 2.00 GHz
2GB of RAM
3GB of Virtual RAM
Sigma Tel Audio
Nvidia Quadro NVS 120M

So can anyone please help how to make my games run faster, and smoother?
Also I play GTA:SA online, COD 4, and both of them lag, as well as other games I try to play.

A. Is this a desktop or a laptop?

For either type:

-Minimize the amount of background programs running, to include antivirus
-Change your resolution to a more commonly supported one (try to match the game res if possible)
-lower the amount of detail, shading, etc to see a better framerate, at the expense of detail quality
-to reduce lag issues, use a wired connection and forward ports if you know how to

For Desktops:

-Increase the amount of RAM (eg 4GB instead of 2GB)
-Swap out the RAM for faster RAM (if the board can support it)
-Try installing a better graphics card. You may have to upgrade your Power Supply as well
