What would i need to make a great gaming computer?

Q. In terms of components. I know i need a case, hard drive, cpu and such. I mean do i specifically need? 4 gb high speed ram? Dual core processor? What makes a great gaming computer? This is my first computer and my budget is $3000, so money really isn't an issue.

A. well id say quad core cpu. heres what im building now which will run 99% of (or maybe even all) games on max settings:

Radeon HD 6950 2GB

i5-2500k @3.3ghz

COOLER MASTER HAF 912

4gb ddr3 1600mhz gskill ripjaws (2GBx 2 ram sticks) better to have 2 or 4 sticks to use dual channel memory

GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3P LGA 1155 Intel Z68

650W PSU from OCZ

COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus (optional but very helpful since stock cpu fans usually suck)

and you can pick and choose for the HDD/SSD

A. i7 2600k sandy bridge
good case good air flow and for space for future builds
700 watt supply
sli motherboard
dual gtx 580's
cheap sata DVD ROM
4gs of ram
windows 7 home premium
1tb of memory
and get a 120 ssd
nuff said this will run games at max settings for the next 3-4 years
