Why are we so enthusiastic with making our computers fast? Is there still a need to be enthusiastic about it ?

Q. What is the point of further increasing the processing speed of our computers. Is the intel core duo not enough? If it is not enough, who are benefiting from further increasing the processing speed of computers? From what I can observe only the computer game industries benefits from these. Are there more practical application in increasing processing speed?
How about focusing on increasing internet speed instead. I think it is more practical.

How about increasing the speed of the internet.

A. It fuels consumerism. Take my example. Am using P4 1.8 GHz. When I really think about it, the most wholesome computing I do can be done on this pc. I can watch movies, play music, use word processor, etc. And this is a rather old system, the processor i bought like 7 years ago, i changed the motherboard, the video card, added an extra hd and memory since then. The thing is, i seem to have replaced everything but the processor. But the debut of the core duo threatened the existence of my system. Now I can't but any spare when any of the parts fails. They change the lay out every six months so nothing fits and you're forced to buy a whole new system.

Non-gamers, non-video editors, people not onto extreme graphics, people not into using softwares like autocad and the like, you don't need the computing power of a core duo. If all you do is surf the net, opening not more than 4 windows; use a word processor, watch movie, play some mp3's, you don't. Heck, you can even do this on a Pentium 3 without missing any speed.

Innocent people are made to believe that if they use a super fast pc they can surf the net faster, type their five page document faster, watch movie better, hear music better. What a swindle. Your net experience depends on how your ISP which you pay every month for your internet connection throttle you bandwidth. They advertise speed like up to 1500 kbps. "Up to" means you get 1500 kbps when you are the only subscriber who is connected and all the rest shut down their pc's because they're tired of looking at the progress bar. You can type your 5 page even 50 page document on a Pentium 3 just fine, trust me. If you're not an audio video geek, (that is, you don't know what anti-aliasing means, what bitrate is) you won't missed a thing if you played your dvd on old faithful and super brand new over spec pc.

To sum it all, the hardware makers are wasting the kids time on the tube and wasting our (not so old) time waiting for web pages to finish loading.

Why do people have such poor view of video games?
Q. I have noticed that whenever I try to mention that I play video games all these kinds of people will respond with is either: that I play something like Mario or that I play a facebook game. But for some reason people never seem to think of games like Starcraft, Civilizations, Total War series, Age of Empires, Myst, Deus Ex, and many other great games that to me I think can be quite challanging and educational. I don't know why that a lot of non gamers will hate on video games when they have never even played any of these games. Why do you think that is?

A. When most people think of video games, they think of CoD, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed and other similar popular games. The 'actual' popular games are mostly known through the gaming community itself (I.E. TF2, L4D2, Half life series) and so on. At least that's what I think makes people look down on us. That and we sit in front of a tv/computer wasting our times.
