How can I help my son overcome his shyness?

Q. My son is 8 & extremely shy. When we're out, he'll barely speak when spoken to. He told me he only has like 3-4 friends at school & if they're not around he sits by himself. I want him to be more outgoing & not be afraid to make friends with new kids. There are no kids in our neighborhood so when he's not in school, he's by himself in his room watching cartoons or playing computer & video games all day. How can I make him break out of his shell?

A. dont force him! it'll just make him more shy :) just let him do his thing and he will start making friends :) the same thing happened to me. my mom didn't force me and last year i got voted "most likely to appear on a magazine cover" XD so just let him go at his own pace. if it stats to be a problem ask his friend parents. hope i helped!

What are some activities for school age children?
Q. I run an afterschool/summer program. The school age kids always say they're bored, however all they want to do is look at a screen--tv, computer, video game, etc. I need easy fun ideas we can do to keep them entertained.

A. How about looking into (academic) contests they can enter?

Make a fun (even music) video and post it on youTube?

Start a newspaper (see link)?

Play some games of jeopardy (see link)?

Talent show?

Community service? Find a cause that you and your students can help out with... care packages to soldiers perhaps?

Scavenger hunt?

International food day - have each kid bring in an international food and "pig out."
