What desktop computer should I look for to buy if I want to play high quality games?

Q. I'm looking to buy the best desktop computer for gaming and music and school work. What's the best computer out there?

A. Watch some you tube videos about PC assembly. Then order the parts and you'll get a much better computer for your money... The best gaming computer is one that fits your budget.
You need to match the performance of the computer with your computer monitor. High end graphics cards perform better with higher end resolutions, where as mid range cards out perform high end graphics cards at lower resolutions, such as 1400x900...
You also have to keep in mind, instead of buying a high priced monitor, many times it is cheaper to buy a 32" HDTV from Walmart. It is just as easy to hook up a HDTV as it is to hook up a monitor, to your PC...
As for CPU, technically any CPU with 2.8Ghz of speed or better will power a mid range card easily. Midrange cards include any of the GT, or ti Nvidia cards, and any of the 68xx or less ATI cards... Only if you SLI or xfire, or use a very high end card such as a 580GTX 590GTX Nvidia, or 5970, 6970, 6990, will you need more of a top of the line CPU... Those cards and or an SLI or xfire configuration will definatly require more CPU power, or you will bottleneck the cards with the CPU's lack of performance.
For a good gaming computer you can still get by with 4Gb of DDR3 1600mhz ram, very cheap nowdays...
Motherboard selection is actually simple, once you know what you want in a CPU. Just match the socket of the CPU with the socket type made on the motherboard... Ex. LGA 1155, or AM3/AM3+... I mention those, because lets just pretend those are the only 2 you should consider... PCIEx16 slots should be considered as well... If you choose to go with a lower end graphics card now, and you know there is a possibility of SLI or crossfire you need to choose a motherboard at this time, that will accept another graphics card...
At this time SLI is as simple as this when it comes to motherboards. If you want to SLI 2 nvidia cards, you want to go LGA1155... AMD motherboards with Nvidia chipsets for SLI are like 2 years old, and have no SATA3 or USB 3.0 ports... If you want to use ATI cards your choice is wide open between Intel and AMD motherboards, as all you need to look for is making sure the PCIEx16 slots operate at at least x8 speed. Motherboards with PCIEx16 slots that run at x4 are unacceptable for midrange or high end graphics cards...
As you can see, deciding your hardware is much harder than building any computer on the market.

How much does building a good desktop computer cost?
Q. I am looking to build or buy a desktop computer to use for video games, a little music, and a tiny bit of school usage (programs like word and powerpoint) how much would this cost?
I have moniter and would only need a keyboard and mouse.

A. That really depends on how awesome of a gaming computer you want to build or buy. You can build a complete system, with decent graphics, and all of the parts, including a new case and power supply, along with an OEM version of Windows, for less than $1,000.

You can also spend upwards of $3,000 or even $4,000, if you choose expensive (fast) enough parts, with dual video cards.
