What is Nvidia GeForce on a computer?

Q. I just want to know. Someone told me that it's important for computer gaming or something like that, with graphics or whatever, but I was just curious. Also, what does 1 GB of it mean? I know that a GB is a gigabyte but what does this mean in terms of performance? Would 1 GB of Nvidia GeForce GT 230M be able to play most games combined with a good hard drive and processor and everything? Thanks.

A. First of all, you must know these basic things:

I suppose that you know what a CPU (Central Processing Unit) does in your computer- it is the brain of your computer and does all the major processing in the computer. Now there is another processor, called a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), which is situated either on your motherboard or the graphic card. It does all the processing related to graphics (all that you see on your screen). Without it, you cannot see anything on your screen (don't worry, motherboards without an on-board (i.e. located on the motherboard itself) GPU are rare, and I think your motherboard must have one if you have been able to see anything on your computer screen). Generally the GPU on the motherboard is less powerful than that on a graphic card. Nvidia is a manufacturer of GPUs and GeForce is one of its series, and GT 230M is one of the product of the series.

Now comes the 1 GB part. You know that the CPU needs a RAM installed on the motherboard to temporarily store the things it is working on, just as you will open a book and keep on the top surface of your table, and not read it from the drawer itself. Similarly a GPU also needs a RAM to temporarily store the things it is working on. Generally the GPU located on the motherboard shares a bit of the RAM on the motherboard, but cannot make full use of it as it is meant for the main CPU. A graphic card has a separate RAM specially for the GPU on the graphic card, so that it can make full use of it; and this gives better performance as the GPU does not always have to beg for the main RAM, it can access its own RAM faster and also clears the extra responsibility of the main RAM so that it can dedicate itself completely to the main CPU. The 1 GB is the capacity of the RAM on the graphic card.

You must also know the following things:
1. Nvidia is not the only manufacturer of graphic cards. ATI is another which produces graphic cards as good as Nvidia, and sometimes even better for the same price (not always), but it is not as famous as Nvidia. I would suggest you to check ATI Radeon series and compare before buying anything.
2. For gaming, a powerful GPU supported by enough dedicated RAM is one of the most important things, even more important than an LCD monitor. You can compromise for a CRT monitor, but not for the on-board GPU or poor graphic card.
2. Just the amount of RAM on the graphic card does not make it an excellent graphic card. The GPU (for example, GT 230M) on the graphic card is the most important thing, and huge RAM is required to support it. Only a huge RAM and a poor GPU cannot give you good performance.

Nvidia GeForce GT 230M is a good GPU, enough for mid level gaming. But if you want the extreme performance, I would recommend Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M. But of course, you'll have to pay much more.

Hope you use my lengthy advices to make the correct choice.

Why does my screen get smaller when I move my mouse a certain way on the screen?
Q. This usually happens during game play on the internet. When my screen get smaller, it therefore makes my game tables smaller. This makes it impossible to see the entire game. I have tried zooming in, however it only make the game table bigger, with still the same inability to be seen by my normally. In other words, it is larger bug the table diminsions are still too small. I am using a Toshiba laptop, and I have heard this complaint from other owners.

A. If other Toshiba laptop owners have the same complaint, maybe it is a bug in Toshiba laptops and maybe you should buy some other brand. Computers are cheap enough now to buy one and throw it away if you don't like it.
