How do I stop lagging like crazy from my tenant downloading stuff?

Q. I share the internet with some people renting out my basement, and they're ALWAYS torrenting stuff. Is there a way to make it have less effect on my computer and online gaming? I don't exactly want to shut off their internet entirely, but is there a way to do that too? Thanks.

A. Yes, but it might cost you. What you are looking for is a feature that some routers have called Quality of Service (referred to as QoS).

Without QoS, all network traffic from all computers is treated equally. Torrenting will indeed be a massive drain on your network since it will try to use up every bit of bandwidth available.

With QoS, the router looks at all the network traffic and decides what gets higher priority.

If you've got a good level of computer knowledge, you can set these rules up manually in your router, directing it to give your computer and gaming system priority over your tenants' computers.

A much easier solution, which will probably solve your problem, is to let the router automatically decide what gets priority. If your router has QoS and Automatic Classification, it has built in rules to make sure things like streaming video, VOIP, and online gaming are highest priority which always go through first, web browsing second, and torrent downloads get whatever is left over. I think this will probably be the best and easiest option.

You'll have to log in to your router and see if it supports QoS and Automatic Classification. If it doesn't, it may be worth spending a little money to replace it with one that does. For less than the cost of two PS3 games, you can actually use your computer and gaming system. A very well liked and well reviewed router that I know supports QoS and Automatic Classification is the D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router. I've used it personally, and it performs very well. You might be able to pick one up at your local computer store. If not, I know Amazon sells this model for $90 and free shipping:

How to discipline my 14 year old son?
Q. My son, 14 year old going on 15, keeps on leaving the house to be with his friends to play computer online games. The problem is, I keep on telling him to stop, but he just ignore what I am saying and will do it again the next day. I am a single mom and I am having problems disciplining him. Could someone help me or give me some advise as to how I can make him follow me.
He starts joining on line tournaments wuth cash involve. Isnt that gambling already?

A. Appreciate he's leaving to play computer games, and hopefully not something else.
